The Ruhr-Sieg-Express is a regional express train run in the local rail passenger traffic of North Rhine-Westphalia , which runs from Essen via Bochum , Witten , Hagen and Iserlohn-Letmathe via Finnentrop to Siegen Hbf or Iserlohn . It is operated by Abellio Rail NRW every hour.

history

In summer 2001, DB Reise & Touristik canceled the Interregio line 22 from Frankfurt (Main) Hauptbahnhof via the Ruhr-Sieg route to Düsseldorf (until summer 1999 to Münster ) and in 2002 the once-daily route to Norddeich Mole . As a replacement from the timetable change on June 10, 2001, the Ruhr-Sieg-Express (RE 16) was ordered by the Rhine-Ruhr , Ruhr-Lippe and Westphalia-South associations . The newly created line initially led beyond Siegen to Au (Sieg), this branch was taken over by the DB as Sieg-Dill-Bahn (RB 95) in December 2002 and operated under the DreiLänderBahn brand since December 2004 . Since December 2015, HLB has been operating this section under the same brand name as Westerwald-Sieg-Bahn (RB 90) at different cycle times, but with a connection to Altenkirchen (Ww) - Westerburg and planned to Limburg (Lahn) .

In 2004, the RE 16 was put out to tender together with the RB 40, RB 56 and RB 91 lines as the Ruhr-Sieg network. The tender was won by Abellio Rail NRW , which took over the operation of the lines mentioned on December 9, 2007 for an initial twelve years. When Abellio started operations, Welschen Ennest was added as a regular stop.

In the course of the cuts in regionalization funds, there was a special regulation on weekends from the 2007/2008 timetable change until the change in December 2013: The RB 91 trips were canceled on Saturdays from 4 p.m. or 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and on Sundays all day until 8 p.m. The RE 16 stopped on Saturdays and Sundays every two hours, alternating at the stations Meggen and Kirchhundem as well as Littfeld and Eichen. Because of this regulation, these four stations were served more frequently on Saturdays than on all other days.

vehicles

A Flirt of Abellio in Essen Hbf, here as RB 40 Ruhr-Lenne-Bahn

In the early days of the Ruhr-Sieg-Express came primarily railcars of the 425 series are used. However, the type of material used later fluctuated considerably.

So sometimes two railcars of the 426 series were used in double traction or one vehicle of each of the two series was mixed, as well as single vehicles. An operationally not unproblematic triple unit of the 426 series was also occasionally driven. In the last few weeks before the change of operator, this happened quite often, as the 425 series was hardly ever used.

The use of both series has meanwhile ended, since the line has been operated by Abellio Rail NRW with two and three-part electric multiple units of the Stadler FLIRT type since the timetable change on December 9, 2007 . The contract with Abellio runs until December 2034. Since the contract was extended in 2019, the trains also have WiFi on board. The trains were also equipped with new sockets, LED lighting, monitors for digital passenger information and new furniture.

A three-part flirtation is usually used between Essen and Siegen, and a two-part flirtation between Essen and Iserlohn. In principle, there is always at least one five-part Flirt multiple unit between Essen and Iserlohn-Letmathe.

Service offer

The Ruhr-Sieg-Express runs daily between 6 a.m. and 8 p.m. Outside of these times, the trains stop at all stations and are usually operated as RB 91. A RE 16 runs in the morning on weekdays in the direction of Essen, which stops at all stations between Siegen and Hagen. In the evening there is a daily RE 16 from Essen, which also serves all stations between Hagen and Siegen and therefore does not reach the usual connection to Frankfurt at 9:54 pm in Siegen.

Wing in Iserlohn-Letmathe

The wing train concept is a special feature. The trains from Iserlohn and Siegen are brought together in Iserlohn-Letmathe and continue to run together via Hagen, Witten and Bochum to Essen. In the opposite direction it is the other way around.

future

According to the plans of the DB for the expansion of long-distance traffic, every second journey between Iserlohn-Letmathe and Siegen will be replaced by a so-called Intercity 2 ( Norddeich Mole  -) Münster  - Hamm  - Dortmund / Unna  - Siegen - Frankfurt , which is co-financed from local transport , which bypasses Hagen and Gießen , no longer stops in Welschen Ennest , but does ensure the connection to Cologne by changing the direction of travel in Siegen Hbf .

There are also plans to use the Ruhr-Sieg-Express and the Ruhr-Lenne-Bahn between Essen and Bochum via the S-Bahn line via Wattenscheid-Höntrop instead of the long-distance line when the Rhein-Ruhr-Express (RRX) starts operating in 2020 Stop at Wattenscheid station. The Ruhr-Lenne-Bahn will then stop in Essen-Steele instead of Essen-Kray Süd.

NRW clock

The Ruhr-Sieg-Express is included in the integral cycle timetable of North Rhine-Westphalia, called NRW-Takt .

To complement the offer, two regional trains run parallel to the Ruhr-Sieg-Express , the Ruhr-Lenne-Bahn (RB 40) between Essen and Hagen and the Ruhr-Sieg-Bahn (RB 91) between Hagen and Siegen or Iserlohn . Due to the different number of intermediate stops, there is only an approximate 30-minute cycle.

In Siegen Hbf there are clocked connections from the Ruhr-Sieg-Express to the Rhein-Sieg-Express (RE 9) in the direction of Cologne , the Rothaarbahn (RB 93) to Betzdorf and to the Main-Sieg-Express (RE 99) to Gießen and every two hours to Frankfurt am Main .

Further connections exist in Iserlohn to the Ardey-Bahn (RB 53) to Dortmund and in Finnentrop to the Biggesee-Express (RB 92) to Olpe. In Iserlohn-Letmathe there is an hourly change from Siegen to Iserlohn.

Coming from Siegen / Iserlohn, the RE 16 in Hagen Hbf has a connection to the RB 52 to Dortmund and Lüdenscheid , the RE 13 to Hamm and Venlo , the RE 17 to Warburg and long-distance traffic to Bremen / Hamburg or Hanover / Leipzig.

The important hourly connection to the ICE line 10 to Berlin can be reached in Hagen with the RB 91 with shorter transfer times than when using the RE 16.

In Bochum there are connections to the RE 6 and RE 11 lines in the direction of Dortmund and Mülheim / Duisburg as well as the RB 46 to Gelsenkirchen. In Essen the RE 2 can be reached in the direction of Münster.
