The Betzdorf (Sieg) train station is the train station in the Rhineland-Palatinate town of Betzdorf in the Altenkirchen district . It belongs to station category 3 and has 5 platform tracks . It is located on route kilometers 83.0 and 123.1 of the victory route and is the starting point of the Hellertalbahn to Haiger / Dillenburg and the Daadetalbahn to Daaden .

history

Betzdorf train station in 1862

The history of the station began with the construction of the Cologne-Deutz-Gießen railway line and the branch line from Betzdorf to Siegen on January 10, 1861. With the construction of the two lines, Betzdorf became a hub and railway town with a marshalling yard for the surrounding iron ore mines and the town experienced an increase in population.

Its importance as a railway junction meant that the city and the train station suffered from heavy air raids during World War II , which resulted in two-thirds of the city being bombed. Among other things, 61 people were killed in an air raid on March 12, 1945. This attack was carried out by the US 8th Air Force using B-17 bombers.

From the mid- 1950s years almost all Betzdorfer were railway stations and installations such as the repair work , the depot , the Federal Railroad -Betriebsamt, the marshalling yard, the railroad board that Fernmeldemeisterei , the station management and freight handling decommissioned so Betzdorf today only railway junction in passenger traffic is.

Track systems

The Betzdorf train station has a total of six passable tracks, two mostly overgrown tracks and two overbuilt tracks. Between the tracks 105 and 102 is the entrance building .

The numbering begins on the northeast side, at today's parking garage .

  • Track 108 was a through track without a platform . When the parking garage was built, it was partly built over, partly left to nature.
  • Track 107 was a through track and shared an island platform with track 106 . It was dismantled from the parking garage to the train station due to direct pedestrian access. In the course of the 2015 Rhineland-Palatinate cycle , the track should be reactivated by the timetable change in December 2016 (for details see section #Future ) so that the Rothaarbahn (RB 93) trains can leave here.
  • Track 106 is on the platform next to the former track 107. Today the trains of the Rhein-Sieg-Express (RE 9) and the Dreiländerbahn (RB 90) in the direction of Au (Sieg) / Cologne / Aachen stop here . In addition, the Rothaarbahn (RB 93) trains in the direction of Siegen / Bad Berleburg leave here, and they have their starting point here until platform 107 can be used again.
  • Track 105 is a through track and is located on the northeastern house platform , which partly connects to the southwestern house platform on track 102. Today the trains of the Rhein-Sieg-Express (RE 9) and the Dreiländerbahn (RB 90) in the direction of Siegen stop here .
  • Track 102 is a through track and is the second house platform on the southwest side of the reception building. Here the HLB trains run towards Herdorf / Dillenburg via the Hellertalbahn (RB 96).
  • Track 101 is another through track and is located on the platform next to track 113. This track is used as a sideline for trains on the Heller and Daadetalbahn trains. In addition, the trains of the Westerwald-Sieg-Bahn (RB 90) to Altenkirchen via Au (Sieg) depart from here and have their starting point here.
  • Track 113 is also a through track on the island platform next to track 101. Only the trains of the Daadetalbahn (RB 97) to Daaden stop here .
  • Track 114 is the only continuously passable track without a platform. Today, however, it is rarely used to drive through or park trains.
  • Like track 114, track 115 has no platform and is now mostly overgrown with bushes and small trees.
  • Track 116 , like the neighboring track 115, is an overgrown track with no platform.

The platforms of Betzdorf train station can be reached via stairs and elevators in the pedestrian underpass .

buildings

The locomotive and car halls of the former railway repair shop, which were built shortly after 1861, are now a listed building .

Reception building

The station has the address Bahnhofstrasse 1 . There is a travel center and a small shop in the reception building . In addition, the Hellertalbahn GmbH had its headquarters here.

traffic

At the station Betzdorf wrong in 2016 a total of a regional express line and four regional train lines for regional transport . Long-distance trains do not run on the lines leading to Betzdorf station . Regional freight traffic takes place regularly through the Siegener Kreisbahn between the Hellertal route or Scheuerfeld train station and the container terminal in Kreuztal. Supraregional freight trains mostly run as diversions from the right Rhine route via Betzdorf and Siegen to the Dill route and on to southern Germany.

Before the Asdorftalbahn was shut down , there were also passenger trains from here to Freudenberg and Olpe / Dieringhausen .

  • Track 107 was closed in 2004 due to the footpath between the car park and track 106 . The trains of the RB 93 therefore temporarily turn in the freight yard and leave platform 106 in the direction of Siegen. The reactivation of track 107 began in August 2016, the work should have been completed by the 2016 timetable change, but was then stopped again and will probably only be able to continue in 2020 when the Federal Railway Authority has granted building permission. Track 107 is currently built from both sides to the footpath, which has been provisionally secured with a buffer stop from the direction of the freight yard. In addition, the exit signals are already set up in both directions and ready for use. The new overhead line was installed in August 2019.

Bus transport

Bus station in Betzdorf

There are various bus lines from the nearby bus station operated by four transport companies that connect neighboring communities and other districts. Most trips serve as school trips, which is why they mainly only run in the morning and early noon. Since the state border with North Rhine-Westphalia is not far away, communities and districts are inevitably also served there.

Rates

Since August 1, 2002, the tariff of the Verkehrsverbundes Rhein-Sieg (VRS) has been recognized as a transitional tariff on the rail routes in the Altenkirchen district if the start or destination station is in the area of the VRS. The district of Altenkirchen has also been a member of the Rhein-Mosel transport association (VRM) since January 1st, 2009 . The VRM tariff applies to trips within the Altenkirchen district and to other districts that are members of the VRM, e.g. B. in the district of Neuwied . Membership in the VRM enables passengers with network tickets to switch from train to bus or vice versa without having to buy another ticket.

future

Since December 2015 the trains of the Westerwald-Sieg-Bahn (RB 90) have been running from Limburg / Altenkirchen via Au (Sieg) via Betzdorf to Siegen / Kreuztal . For the line RB 90 in the direction of Altenkirchen, additional trains with a start in Betzdorf from track 101 run Monday to Friday, for which a new switch was specially laid to enable the change to the track in the direction of Au (Sieg). In addition, the journeys of the Rothaarbahn (RB 93) via Kreuztal and Erndtebrück to Bad Berleburg no longer start in Siegen, but already in Betzdorf.

Since 2012, various media have repeatedly reported that there are plans to rebuild the previously dismantled track 107 for the RB 93 line in the direction of Erndtebrück; at the point where a pedestrian connection between the P + R facility and the train station has now been created. Instead of the pedestrian overpass, the existing pedestrian tunnel between tracks 106 and 113 is now to be extended into the P + R facility. The construction of the track started a year late in October 2016 as part of the renovation of tracks 105 and 106 and was interrupted in December 2016 due to the weather. Track 107 should go into operation “in spring” 2017. The tunnel construction should be possible "at any time" and be completed "in February 2017". However, this date is also lagging behind and there is talk of the fact that "construction cannot start before 2019" due to a new planning approval procedure at the EBA . According to a report by the Siegener Zeitung , this plan approval procedure concerns a new noise protection report , which will not be drawn up before 2020. Some time later, the Rhein-Zeitung also reported on an inquiry from the editors to the Federal Railway Authority in Bonn, according to which it is said that applications were submitted by DB Netz AG at the end of 2015 and in May 2016 , but both due to significant deficiencies in the application Plan approval procedures had to be rejected. As the Siegener Zeitung reported, a noise protection report was ignored, but a new application should be available by October 2018. DB Netz AG is currently expecting further construction "not before 2020". However, this date is doubted because a plan approval procedure at the EBA can take years, according to the Rhein-Zeitung. Due to the necessary improvements in the planning approval, the Siegener Zeitung does not expect implementation until the end of 2021.

After an on-site meeting in August 2019, the SPD member of the state parliament, Sabine Bätzing-Lichtenthäler , made a request to the responsible DB AG as to whether and when it was planned to convert the platforms of the station to be barrier-free. The background to this is that wheelchair users, in particular, have difficulty getting into the trains or not at all. The railway announced that first of all the barrier-free access from the parking garage to track 106/107 would be built, with the completion of track 107 by the end of 2020. Then, in spring 2021, the platforms of track 106/107 would be raised so that both double-decker trains and the Talent 2 multiple units can use their ramps for barrier-free access.

All other platforms of the train station in Betzdorf will only be completely accessible by the end of the 2020s.

After years of standstill in the construction work on the underpass to the P + R facility and on track 107, the Federal Railway Authority submitted documents to the city of Betzdorf at the end of June 2020, which were then approved immediately. However, the planned increase in the platform to 76 cm was criticized because the Hessische Landesbahn is equipped with railcars that only allow barrier-free access at a platform height of 55 cm. It is now urging that the HLB be equipped with appropriate trains for future fleets, since gradually all platforms on the victory route should be adjusted to 76 cm.
