The Haiger train station is the "main station" of the Haiger community of the same name in the Lahn-Dill district in central Hesse .

history

The first station at this point was built in 1862 when the Cöln-Mindener Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft built the Deutz-Gießener Eisenbahn from today's Cologne-Deutz to Gießen . The station only became more important when the direct connection between Siegen and Dillenburg was connected to the Dill route in 1915 . In 1926 the line to Breitscheid was added. Passenger traffic on this route was discontinued in 1980 and freight traffic in 1997.

Reception building

In the years 1911–1913 a new station building was built as a wedge station between the old line (today: the Betzdorf – Haiger line ) and the new line to Siegen. The architect was Ludwig Hofmann . The wedge station is at an angle between the two elevated railway embankments , so that the platform underpasses can be reached at ground level from street level. However, the platforms are not barrier-free . The facade and largely the building itself are designed symmetrically around a central axis. The facade is dominated by a central projection made of yellow sandstone . The ensemble is executed in a mixture of classical elements and Art Nouveau . The station is at a height of 270 m above sea level . The building is a cultural monument.

The current condition of the reception building appears neglected; On the track side, the station gives the impression of an industrial wasteland . A new pub opened in 2012 has now been closed again after violating fire protection regulations .

Although the inscription "Fahrausweis" can be read on one wall, these are now only available from machines . In the middle of the building there are also two functionless metal grilles, in front of each a bench ; these are fragments of the platform barrier that was abandoned around the 1960s .

stretch

Haiger station is touched by the main line Siegen – Gießen (“ Dill line ”) and the Haiger – Betzdorf line (“Hellertalbahn”), a single-track line still classified as the main line today , the remainder of the former Deutz-Gießener railway . A third line, the Haiger – Breitscheid line ("Aubachtalbahn"), has been without traffic since September 30, 1997 and has been closed. The route of the station is as follows:

On the Dill route there is a central platform with two tracks, with one through track each on the outside. On the route there is a side platform on the only remaining track. All other track systems were removed except for one siding on each route.
