The Bombardier Talent 2 ( spelling TALENT ) is a family of multiple units from the manufacturer Bombardier Transportation . “Talent” is an acronym for Talbot's light commuter railcar . The Talent 2 is technically not related to the Bombardier Talent railcar originally developed and built by Talbot .
The Talent 2 railcars are listed in the German Vehicle Settings Register as series 0442, 1442, 2442, 3442, 8442 and 9442 and at Deutsche Bahn as series 442, 1442, 2442 and 3442 . The intermediate cars are classified in the series 443, 1443, 2443, 8443 and 9443 .
Originally it was envisaged the four-part talent 2 to be referred to as the 428 series . However, due to the double occupancy with the four-part flirt , this was discarded in September 2008.
On September 23, 2008, the talent 2 presented to the public for the first time at the InnoTrans in Berlin. It is produced in the Bombardier factory in Hennigsdorf .
Because of the eye-catching design of the railcar head, the Talent 2 colloquially called "hamster cheek".
In mid-2017, the manufacturer announced that it would no longer accept orders for Talent 2, as the successor model Talent 3 , which is based on Talent 2, was presented in 2016 . The last delivery of Talent 2 goes to Abellio Baden-Württemberg for the newly acquired Stuttgart network.
Vehicle concept
The talent 2 is a standard gauge full -gauge railway vehicle in accordance with the UIC standard in steel construction. It is offered as a two- to six-part articulated vehicle . The joints are designed as a wagon transition over Jakobs bogies . A maximum of four units, also of different lengths, can be coupled. The total length is limited to 315 meters.
The drive power is determined by the number of driven axles and is up to 4040 kilowatts (six-part). The drive motors used, each with 380 kilowatts of continuous output, can deliver 505 kilowatts for a short time and come from Škoda . Two different transformers are used for better weight distribution. In addition to the larger type with four windings and 1712 kilowatts of power, which is used in the two- and three-part sets, the four- and five-part versions also have an additional transformer with only two windings and 856 kilovolt-amperes, which is housed in the second end car is. Together, up to 3030 kilowatts of power are available during peak load times. Six-part units have two large transformers, which can generate up to 4040 kilowatts of power.
Depending on the number of cars and their equipment, the vehicles have around 110 to 340 seats. The seats can be implemented in compartment, row or single seating and folding seats . However, the disadvantage is the large, inconveniently placed rubbish bins, which considerably limit the space available on the window seats and the seating comfort.
In order to be able to offer a variant with tilting technology, the side walls are arched up and down with a six meter radius. This means that a gap bridging is necessary in the entry area.
The talent 2 is designed for different purposes from the S-Bahn to the operation of regional routes in the area. The vehicle has a modular structure, the vehicles are assembled according to the individual requirements and wishes of the customer. In particular, the length of the train, the boarding height and the vehicle layout, such as seats, toilets, passenger information, etc. can be specified. Due to the modular structure, subsequent changes are basically also possible.
Each car can have one or two outer passenger compartment doors per side. At Deutsche Bahn, the S-Bahn versions have two entrances in each intermediate car, the Regional Express versions only one. The end cars of all variants have only one entry, which is followed by the high-floor area at the end of the car.
The door openings are 1300 mm wide and 2000 mm high.
The continuous average floor height in the train is 695 millimeters above the top of the rails, only the end cars have a high-floor area on the driver's cab side. The entry height can be achieved with 600 or 800 millimeters. In the entry area, the different floor and entry heights are compensated for by ramps. Depending on the entry height and requirements, one or two sliding steps can be installed on each door to bridge the gap between the vehicle and the platform.
While the wagons are made of lightweight steel, the driver's cabs have an interchangeable fiberglass-reinforced head panel. A deformation-proof frame is installed around the driver's cab, with shock absorbing elements in front of them.
The multiple units have a longitudinal stiffness of 1500 kN, when using the transition coupling the compressive force is limited to 250 kN. It is not the box construction of the railcars that has a limiting effect, but the drawbar mount of the auxiliary vehicle.
The high-floor section houses the transformer and batteries, the converters are on the roof.
The manufacturer offers vehicles for all four traction current systems common in Europe , but so far only units have been ordered for the single-phase AC system with 15 kilovolts at a frequency of 16.7 Hertz, which is common in the DA-CH region.
Order and operation
Around 400 Talent 2 multiple units are in operation in Germany.
Deutsche Bahn
On February 2, 2007, Bombardier and Deutsche Bahn signed a framework agreement for up to 321 units of one as a talent 2 known for delivery from 2009. The contract has a volume of around 1.2 Billion euros, making it one of the largest orders that DB AG has completed its history by then. The first request from the framework contract comprised 42 multiple units for the Nuremberg S-Bahn and should originally be used as class 442.2 from December 2010. In December 2007, requests for the Moselle Valley Railway (eight four-part and five two-part units) and for the Cottbus – Leipzig route (three two-part and three four-part units each) followed. In a fourth request, DB Regio Rheinland ordered a further 15 units (3 × three-part, 10 × four-part and 2 × five-part) for the operation of the Rhein-Sieg-Express between Aachen and Siegen from December 2010.
The regional and urban transport Bayern GmbH (RSB), a former subsidiary of DB Regio AG, won the contract to operate the E-net francs where as multiple units to be used the design talent 2 (5 × three-part, 9 × four-part and 8 × five-part). The RSB was merged with legal effect on September 9, 2011 with DB Regio AG, which also operates the network.
In July 2009, DB Regio Nordost won part of the "Stadtbahn network" tender of the Berlin-Brandenburg transport association (VBB). It has been operating the RE 7 and 11 and RB 10, 14, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24 lines with three and five-part Talent 2 multiple units in the VBB since December 2011. The fleet was planned with 26 three-car and 22 five-car vehicles. The vehicles have been in use since May 2012. In order to do justice to the different platform heights in the VBB network, 12 three-part and 19 five-part units each have an entry height of 600 millimeters, while the entry height of the others is 800 millimeters. With this request, DB Regio had already requested 176 trains for use in eight federal states from the framework agreement.
Another order from Deutsche Bahn was placed in September 2009 for 22 three and four-part Talent 2 for use as the Mittelhessen-Express and as the regional line Hanau - Friedberg - Gießen from December 2011. In March 2018, unit 442 262 and a week later 442 263 of the Rhein-Sieg-Express were handed over to the Mittelhessen-Express due to a lack of vehicles. The next fetch eight more talent 2 for use as Saxonia-Express RE 50 on the Leipzig – Dresden route from June 2011 was announced by Bombardier Transportation on October 3, 2009.
On July 2, 2010, the DB announced the planned use of over 37 Talent multiple units 2 in the Werdenfels network south of Munich known from December 2013. Shortly afterwards, on July 14, 2010, after winning the Warnow sub-network, DB announced the order for a further 23 five-part units for the operation of the Rostock S-Bahn and the RB 17 between Wismar and Ludwigslust, as well as the RE 1 partly between Rostock and Schwerin from December 2012.
On September 22, 2010, the official award of the Central German S-Bahn network to the DB was announced. A total of 51 three- and four-car trains have been in use there since December 2013. On November 19, 2010, Bombardier placed the corresponding order for 51 Talent 2 known. The transport association Berlin-Brandenburg (VBB) announced on December 20, 2010 that the DB Regio AG from June 2013 the network Elbe-Elster partially with three-part talent 2 will operate.

Remarks:
Replacement traffic
As the vehicles were not available in time for the planned start of operations, as described, replacement concepts were developed. These provide for the use of older vehicles that have already been used on the affected routes and actually because of the talent 2 should be replaced. In some cases, however, vehicles from the DB's inventory were also loaned to other regions. In addition, some locomotives were also rented.
Because the timetables for the talent 2 are designed with higher braking and acceleration values, these could often not be met with the old vehicles, so that in some cases an adjustment of the timetables was necessary. For this reason, the Rhein-Sieg-Express usually had one locomotive at the Zugspitze and one at the end of the train.
Mission planning Berlin / Brandenburg
On January 6, 2012, Deutsche Bahn gave further details on the use of the Talent 2 in Berlin / Brandenburg and the replacement concept that is still required. Thereafter, the delivery of the first stage of operation on the Stadtbahn network (RB 13, 14, 20, 21, 22 and 23) 34 trains required are now expected to take place between March and October 2012. From May 2012, the trains for the lines to Berlin Brandenburg Airport (RE 10, RB 22) was planned. However, since the airport did not open in June 2012, the vehicles are to be used on other routes. The lines RE 7 and RB 14 were gradually driven with 442 in the second half of 2012. Today, these two lines can still not only be used with class 442 railcars, as there are too few vehicles, replacement trains run with double-decker cars and locomotives of the 112 or 143 series. With the commissioning of the second operating stage at the 2012/13 timetable change, according to the transport contract A total of 48 railcar units are used in the Stadtbahn network.
Since June 3, 2012 the Talent 2 trains u. a. on the lines RB 13, RB 20, RB 21 and RB 22, where since December 2011 GTW2 / 6 as well as from the DR stock and drawn with locomotives of the series 143 had driven the performance. In June 14 three- and three five-part units were delivered. On April 8, 2013, the first Talent at RE 11 used. With the 2020 timetable change, line RB14 will be switched to locomotive-hauled trains for two years (until the end of the transport contract) in order to be able to use the Talent 2 for lines RE7, RB10 and RB24.
For operation on the Elbe-Spree network awarded as Lot 3 of the VBB , 19 three- and 22 five-part units will be modernized at Bombardier in Hennigsdorf by December 2022. This modernization includes, among other things, the installation of W-LAN, new seat cushions and a better passenger information system. In the Elbe-Spree network, trains will be used on lines RE 7, RB 20, RB 21, RB 22 and RB 23 from 2022.
Central Germany
After the Talent 2 was presented for the Leipzig – Dresden route at Dresden Central Station, on September 28, 2012, a talent ran for the first time 2 the route from Dresden to Leipzig in passenger service. In addition, aptitude tests were briefly carried out on the S3 from Dresden Hauptbahnhof to Tharandt Talent 2 used. When the timetable changed on December 9, 2012, all four circuits were switched to Talent 2 units. The first passenger deployment on the Leipzig – Cottbus line took place on December 21, 2012.
Since the timetable change on December 15, 2013, the Talent 2 multiple units have been used in the new network of Central Germany's S-Bahn . The trains are based in Halle and are also serviced there. At the beginning of June 2013, the delivery of the trains began, the first use of which began in August 2013 on the Regional Express line between Leipzig and Halle. The trains for the S-Bahn in Central Germany are known as the 1442 series.

Baden-Württemberg
The first four-part railcars for DB Regio Baden-Württemberg were used for staff training from July 2017. They have been in use since the timetable change in December 2017 on the Gäubahn Stuttgart – Hattingen and the Murrbahn Stuttgart – Crailsheim .
Südwestdeutsche Verkehrs-Aktiengesellschaft (SWEG)
The Südwestdeutsche Verkehrs-Aktiengesellschaft (SWEG) ordered two three-part vehicles of this type in October 2011, which they will use on the now electrified Münstertalbahn .
After Deutsche Bahn, SWEG was the second transport company to order Talent 2 multiple units. Due to registration problems, the start of the operation planned for June 9, 2013 was delayed until September 2013. During this period, the ODEG's RegioShuttle RS1 were in operation instead .
Abellio Rail
After Abellio Rail Mitteldeutschland GmbH won the tender for the Saale-Thuringia-Südharz network, the company ordered a total of 35 talent in December 2012 2 worth approx. 175 Million Euros. The order consists of 20 three- and 15 five-car multiple units. Operation began in December 2015. Abellio Rail is the third company to use this type of multiple unit.
For the first time, these have been given a different seating arrangement instead of the one in the Talent 2 of the usual match seats from Nördlinger Franz Kiel GmbH are seats from the Spanish company Fainsa with larger seat spacings. In addition, a ticket machine and, for the first time, a “lounge area” at one end of the car with sofa-like benches and tables have been provided.
On December 8, 2015, a first five-part train unit (the end cars 9442 314 and 814) named Die Wartburg by Abellio Rail Mitteldeutschland .
On June 7, 2016, Abellio Rail Südwest, which shortly thereafter renamed itself Abellio Rail Baden-Württemberg , ordered 24 three- and 19 five-part units with 163 and 273 seats, respectively, worth around 215 Million Euros. These class 8442 multiple units should be in service in Baden-Württemberg from June 2019 and be fully delivered by June 2020. They will be designed according to the requirements of the NVBW and will be able to offer passengers internet access via WLAN . According to the BW model, Abellio sells the vehicles to the Landesanstalt Eisenbahnfahrzeuge Baden-Württemberg and leases them back to Abellio .
A multiple unit for the Neckar Valley regional network was officially presented on October 26, 2017. With three more options drawn, the number of multiple units ordered increased to a total of 52, including both Talent 2 and Talent 3 versions.
Bombardier changed the vehicle delivery schedule several times and was only able to deliver six three-car new vehicles of the 25 three- and five-car Talent 2 multiple units ordered, which are to run between Stuttgart and Mannheim or Osterburken, by the timetable change in December 2019. In addition, the full approval of the new vehicles in multiple and mixed operation by the Federal Railway Authority is to be delayed until mid-2020. The missing 18 trains will be temporarily replaced by rented vehicles, and some of the traffic management will be provided by other transport companies.
National Express
After winning a tender, National Express has been operating the RE lines since December 2015 7 " Rhein-Münsterland-Express " and RB 48 “ Rhein-Wupper-Bahn ” in North Rhine-Westphalia. A total of 35 multiple units are used. Their order was announced by Bombardier on June 4, 2013, for three- and five-part vehicles. They have a total value of around 170 million euros; the first delivery took place on November 28, 2014, the last vehicle was on site in January 2016. It is mainly used in double traction .
Admission process
Admitting the talent 2 by the Federal Railway Authority (EBA) was - like other new construction vehicles - in the public eye. DB had won numerous tenders for these vehicles and primarily wanted to replace old vehicles with them. The first use of the regional transport variant 442 should take place from December 2009 on the Moselle route between Koblenz and Perl as well as on the routes Cottbus – Leipzig Hbf and Cottbus – Falkenberg (Elster). The vehicles could be produced on time, but the approval process for the vehicles could not be completed in time, so that the vehicles were only available after a long delay. According to Bombardier, the delays in approval were due to changes in international standards during the lengthy approval process. In addition, each vehicle lot called up by Deutsche Bahn must be approved separately by the EBA, as each vehicle lot is tailored to the different requirements of the respective area of use.
Even before the first vehicles were delivered to DB Regio, six of the first railcars built by Bombardier were taken out of stock and dismantled due to significant defects.
In the summer of 2010, there were further significant delays. DB Regio Franken had to return three class 442 multiple units to Bombardier for training purposes. The vehicle software had defects, which led to incorrect control of the brakes, drive and other components. This delayed the delivery and thus the expansion of the Nuremberg S-Bahn network, which was planned for December 2010, but could only take place with existing and rented locomotive and rolling stock.
The Federal Railway Authority states that the manufacturer has started series production, although important intermediate steps were still open. Safety-relevant components such as brakes would not have met the approval criteria and would have had to be replaced. This has led to further changes to other components. In May 2011, 100 vehicles were parked in the Bombardier plant in Hennigsdorf near Berlin and on rented sidings in the Berlin area. Bombardier incurred considerable costs for renting the tracks. Furthermore, penalties were due to DB for the delayed delivery. As a result of the shutdown, the vehicles suffered considerable downtime damage; they also had to be overhauled before they could be used. In addition, some vehicles were not spared from vandalism .
In February 2011 the then Federal Transport Minister Peter Ramsauer ( CSU ) got involved in the approval process. Together with DB board member Volker Kefer and the President of the Federal Railway Authority Gerald Hörster , he visited the Bombardier factory in Hennigsdorf for a crisis discussion. After this meeting, Ramsauer announced that the first vehicles are expected to receive approval from the EBA at the end of February. It is also planned that a total of 163 vehicles will be delivered in 2011.
On March 17, 2011, the EBA finally issued a restricted approval for the first vehicles of the Nuremberg S-Bahn. The approval is initially only valid for vehicles in single traction and the maximum speed is limited to 140 km / h. Important components have to be replaced after an unusually short time for the rail industry. Bogies must be replaced after 1.6 million kilometers or after 6.5 years. However, due to these restrictions, DB refuses to accept the vehicles. The software must be further improved for unrestricted approval.
Another problem became known in early May 2011. The Talent 2 has the same train control system (EBI Cab 500) that was installed in the 422 series of S-Bahn vehicles . With the 422 series it turned out that the system does not work properly. Bombardier has therefore revised the system and submitted it to the EBA for approval. At the end of May 2011, Bombardier was able to solve this problem with a software release .
After constructive changes, the Federal Railway Authority approved the four-part Nuremberg trains for double traction on July 14, 2011. The top speed was limited to 140 km / h.
From September 2011, two units each, which are intended for the Nuremberg S-Bahn, were loaned to Aachen, Berlin-Lichtenberg, Cottbus and Trier to train employees. However, it was not used in regular operation with passengers in this context.
In October 2011, representatives of Deutsche Bahn, the manufacturing industry, the Federal Ministry of Transport and the EBA met again for a top-level discussion, which, however, went without any concrete result. Bombardier has been asked again to provide the EBA with the evidence required for approval at short notice.
On October 27, 2011, the EBA finally granted unrestricted approval for the four-part vehicles in the Moselle area and the Nuremberg S-Bahn . All other variants were still pending approval at this point in time.
The first talent 2 have been used on the Nuremberg S-Bahn line 1 in scheduled passenger traffic since November 29, 2011. Since the timetable change on December 11, 2011, some Talent 2 have also been running on the Moselle route in scheduled passenger traffic.
Despite the approval that has now taken place, the DB still refuses to accept the trains. DB complains that there are still defects. Because of one of these deficiencies, the DB deployed two drivers per train from December 11, 2011 to May 11, 2012 . The vehicles are used within the framework of a leasing contract between DB and Bombardier, as soon as DB takes them over into its inventory, the contract ends and DB has to pay the agreed purchase price.
Problems again became known at the end of January 2012. During a test run, a train came to a stop too late due to a software error. Thereupon the current delivery to the DB was stopped. In February 2012, Bombardier made some vehicles available with revised software. After a test by the DB, all vehicles should receive a software update. In addition, conversion work is necessary, which takes four to five days per vehicle.
In spring 2012, the other variants of the multiple unit built up to then were also approved: On February 24, the EBA granted approval for the four-part vehicles for the Rhein-Sieg-Express and Cottbus-Leipzig areas of operation . On March 21st, the EBA granted approval for the three-part vehicles for the Rhein-Sieg-Express and VBB Stadtbahnnetz areas .
On April 20, the EBA approved the five-car vehicles for the VBB Stadtbahnnetz area , and on April 26 also the five-car trains for the Rhein-Sieg-Express, so that all vehicles are approved for this.
On March 8, 2013, the four-part railcars for the Werdenfelsbahn were approved by the EBA.
Operational problems
At the beginning of June 2012, an incident became known in which the doors of a Nuremberg S-Bahn repeatedly opened during the journey. Nobody was harmed in the event. The affected vehicle was taken out of service immediately and the incident was investigated by DB and the manufacturer.
On July 30, 2012, the Talent 2 trains of the Rhein-Sieg-Express between Siegen and Aachen, which had been in use until then, were withdrawn from service. On some vehicles, the screws on the doors had loosened, which could no longer be tightened due to a thread that was turning. The trains were then removed from the timetable at short notice as a safety measure and sent to Bombardier's workshop. After one week, the trains were put back into operation on August 5, 2012.
The German Train Drivers Union stated in November 2012 that the working conditions for train drivers in Talent 2 left a lot to be desired. The quality of the driver's seat was criticized, the dimensions of the driver's cab heating and air conditioning were inadequate and the seals were faulty, so that rainwater penetrated and wind noise could be heard. Since these errors could not be corrected quickly, DB Regio Bayern distributed long underpants and electric blankets to their train drivers on the Franconian Thuringia Express.
In some areas of use, such as the Rhein-Sieg-Express (RSX), the Werdenfels-Express between Innsbruck and Munich or Kochel and Tutzing or on the RE 50 “Saxonia” between Dresden and Leipzig, capacity problems arise because the vehicles ordered cannot cover the passenger demand.

Every customer has different requirements and wishes in terms of vehicle equipment. The modular structure makes it possible to implement these individually, so that the vehicles differ from region to region. The following list gives an overview of the different variants.
