The Franken-Thüringen-Express , FTX for short , is a network of five regional express lines and one regional train line that run through Thuringia and Franconia and connect the cities of Jena , Sonneberg and Saalfeld / Saale in Thuringia with the cities of Würzburg , Bamberg and Nuremberg in Franconia. Since the extension of the line from Jena to Leipzig in December 2018, the Franken-Thuringia Express has also run through Saxony-Anhalt and Saxony . The network introduced in December 2011 is operated by DB Regio Bayern .

The Franken-Thüringen-Express consists of five regional express connections and one regional train line. As a regional express, there are three train runs every two hours, each starting and ending in Nuremberg . As far as Bamberg these all run parallel to line S1 of the Nuremberg S-Bahn . A connection is made from Bamberg on the high-speed line Nuremberg – Erfurt without intermediate stops to Coburg and on to Sonneberg . The line to Leipzig Hauptbahnhof runs to Bamberg together with the line to Würzburg Hauptbahnhof . In Lichtenfels the train parts to Sonneberg and Saalfeld are divided. In addition, a regional train runs every hour from Bamberg to Lichtenfels, which continues every two hours to Kronach.

The two-hour RE connections Nuremberg – Leipzig / Würzburg and Nuremberg – Sonneberg / Saalfeld complement each other to Lichtenfels at hourly intervals. On weekdays, several two-hour regional trains Kronach – Bamberg are extended as RE to Nuremberg, so that these complement each other with RE Sonneberg – Nuremberg (via the high-speed line) from Bamberg to Nuremberg at hourly intervals. As a result, the offer, together with the other two lines between Nuremberg and Bamberg, is partially reduced to a half-hourly service.

From Nuremberg to Haßfurt (in the direction of Würzburg), Schney (in the direction of Sonneberg) and Redwitz an der Rodach (in the direction of Leipzig), the network of the Franken-Thuringia Express is integrated into the greater Nuremberg area .

history

The connection was put into operation with the timetable change in December 2011, but due to the late delivery of the new trains, double-decker trains were initially still used instead of the new electric multiple units. In addition, due to a lack of trains, the direct connection from Nuremberg to Jena could not be operated, so that a change in Lichtenfels had to be made. The line was fully commissioned with new trains in December 2012.

With the timetable change in December 2017, the train routes were reorganized and a new direct connection from Bamberg to Coburg via the high-speed line was introduced, which shortened the shortest journey time between the two cities by half an hour. This also increased the number of connections on the Nuremberg – Bamberg section, which has since been served almost every half hour. In addition, new RE system stops were set up at the transfer stations in Breitengüßbach and Hochstadt - Marktzeuln , among others .

In February 2018 it was announced that the Franken-Thüringen-Express will be extended from Jena to Leipzig Hbf from 2019 , as the ICE connection on this route has been discontinued due to the shift to the high-speed line Nuremberg-Erfurt . This concept is intended to serve as a temporary solution until a new long-distance traffic connection is established via Lichtenfels, Saalfeld and Jena. There is no stop in Jena Saalbahnhof , between Jena and Leipzig the Franken-Thuringia Express also stops in Camburg , Naumburg and Weißenfels . The journey from Jena to Leipzig takes about an hour.

Electric multiple units of the type Bombardier Talent 2 (class 442) are used. On the line Nuremberg-Bamberg-Coburg-Sonneberg 2017 series locomotives are 193 (since December Siemens Vectron ) are used which operate with five double-deck coaches of the type 780.1 and 785.2, and in need of ETCS power equipment the control cars per a locomotive at Zugspitze and end of the train run. DB Regio Franken is renting six locomotives from Railpool for this purpose .

In spring 2014, ten of the 22 multiple units at that time were named with the names of places along the route as part of an internet vote. On August 22, 2014, the Franken-Thüringen-Express Bad Staffelstein was christened on behalf of the nine other trains at the station in Bad Staffelstein , which had received the most votes in relation to the number of inhabitants. In January 2018, another train was christened, this was named the municipality of Breitengüßbach .

criticism

Especially at the beginning, the Franken-Thüringen-Express was heavily criticized, mainly because of frequent delays and insufficient seating capacity.

The passenger association Pro Bahn criticized, among other things, that the type of train used is only suitable for short distances because it offers too little space for passengers and their luggage. The bicycle and stroller spaces are inadequate and hardly accessible because of the bulky toilet fixtures. In addition, the train runs restlessly and accelerates and brakes unpredictably like a bus.
