The Kronach station is in the district town of Kronach in Bavaria administrative district of Upper Franconia . It is a through station on the Frankenwaldbahn from Lichtenfels to Saalfeld and was previously a separation station where the Rodachtalbahn branched off to Nordhalben . The next stops are Neuses near Kronach in the south and Gundelsdorf in the north; The next stop was on the Rodachtalbahn in the Kronach district of Höfles . Kronach station belongs to station category 5 and has five platform tracks and one siding without a platform as well as several butt tracks.

history

The former branch of the Rodachtalbahn

With a city council resolution of April 12, 1853, the Bavarian King Maximilian II was asked for the first permission to build a railway line from Hochstadt to Gundelsdorf, with which the city of Kronach was to be connected to the existing railway network in Bavaria. After several visits by the mayor of Kronach, Carl Mertel, to Munich, this approval was finally officially granted on March 27, 1860. In the months before, various contracts had been concluded between the city of Kronach, the royal transport authorities, the royal bank management and Theodor Freiherr von Cramer-Klett on the financing and construction of the railway line.

There were initially disagreements with the choice of location for the train station. For strategic reasons, the royal ministries had planned the Hofwiesen, which was located on the northwestern edge of today's core city and at that time still outside the actual urban area: The station should be fully visible from the Rosenberg Fortress , so that a clear field of fire should be had. At the location favored by the city, directly on the southwest side of the former city area, the Ziegelanger, the view from the fortress was restricted by several buildings in the city in between. Only after Mayor Mertel made another visit to Munich, where he was allowed to speak to King Maximilian in person, was the city's choice of location approved.

The first passenger train reached Kronach on December 15, 1860, the line between Hochstadt and Gundelsdorf was officially inaugurated on February 20, 1861. On July 26, 1900, operations on the Rodachtalbahn also started from Kronach. After the Second World War , the station largely lost its importance during the division of Germany after the single-track Frankenwaldbahn was dismantled and most trains only ran to Ludwigsstadt , just before the inner-German border . The only long-distance traffic connections were the interzonal and transit trains from Munich to Berlin , which stopped in Kronach. In 1976, passenger traffic on the Rodachtalbahn was stopped. After the German reunification , the Frankenwaldbahn was expanded to double tracks again and InterCity and Interregio trains ran on the route with a stop in Kronach. With the closure of the freight connection to the local Loewe AG in 2002, the freight depot also lost its importance and was also closed and partially dismantled. In the same year, the entire Rodachtalbahn was shut down and in 2005 it was dismantled except for a section between the Kronach train station and the grounds of the State Horticultural Show and the section from Steinwiesen to Nordhalben, which is now a museum railway in island operation . Since the timetable change in December 2007, long-distance traffic stopped in Kronach, only regional express trains and regional trains . Since the timetable change in December 2017, an intercity train pair has stopped again on the Leipzig – Karlsruhe route in Kronach.

Reception building

Entrance building of the station

At the reception building of the station is a as a monument protected three-storey Walmdachbau from sandstone blocks . The building was constructed in a smaller form in 1860/61 and expanded to its present size around 1930. It has two entrances: a main entrance on the station forecourt and one on platform 1. The platform roofing from 1861 with cast iron columns and struts with scroll ornamentation is also a listed building. A bookstore and the Kronach district mobility center are located in the reception building.

Platforms

All platforms can be reached from the station forecourt through an underpass. There are luggage conveyor belts on the stairs to platforms 1 and 2/3. All platforms are equipped with modern train destination displays that provide information on train delays, for example.

House platform 1

From the reception building you get to the house platform with track 1. The covered platform is 212 meters long and has an edge height of 34 centimeters. There are ticket machines for local and long-distance traffic, seating and a bicycle parking space. Only two passenger trains to Saalfeld and Lichtenfels / Bamberg stop there .

Central platform 2/3

Tracks 2 and 3 are the main continuous tracks of the station and are therefore used the most. The middle platform 2/3 is 264 meters long and has an edge height of 38 centimeters. Most trains go north on platform 2, i.e. towards Saalfeld, while on platform 3 almost all trains go south towards Lichtenfels. The platform is covered, offers seating, a snack machine and an information board with a timetable.

Central platform 4/5

Platform 4/5 is not covered and has no seating. It is 236 meters long and has an edge height of 38 centimeters. Almost all passenger trains from Lichtenfels and Nuremberg that end in Kronach arrive at platform 4 . After the renewal of track 5, it is often used to park passenger trains.

Goods facilities

The former freight yard

Kronach used to have a freight yard north of the station, which was closed in 2002. It consisted of a loading dock , goods shed and two tracks. Mainly the Loewe AG wagons were shunted there . Three more freight tracks are located south of the post office, but are rarely used today. Currently, the loading ramp at the signal box north of the station is used almost exclusively for loading wooden wagons. In the past, two locomotives of the V 60 and 333 series were stationed in Kronach for freight transport and the shunting of wagons.

Like the regional train line, the Regional Express lines run every two hours and complement each other from Nuremberg to Saalfeld every hour.

Until the timetable change in 2007, Intercity trains from Munich to Berlin and Interregios stopped in Kronach . Since December 2017, Kronach has again been served by a pair of intercity trains from Leipzig to Karlsruhe.
