Hein Semke

Hein Semke (* 25. June 1899 in Hamburg , Germany ; † 5. August 1995 in Lisbon , Portugal ) was a German sculptor , painter , ceramics - artist and poet .

Life

Semke was born in Hamburg in 1899. During his studies he was at the academies for fine arts in Hamburg and Stuttgart . As a soldier, he took part in the First World War. Between 1918 and 1929 he worked in various professions. Because of his anarchist activities, he served a five-year prison sentence.

He had his first stay in Portugal in 1929, then lived there regularly from 1932. In 1936 he took part in the Spanish Civil War. He died in Lisbon in 1995.

Expressionism can be named as his main artistic direction . His work was not understood by Portuguese art critics and was often reviled.

As a sculptor he created a. a. Works for the "Memorial to the Fallen German Soldiers in World War I" in a patio in Lisbon, as well as sculptures for the German Evangelical Community in Lisbon, for the gardens of the Gulbenkian Foundation and the Lisbon Hotel Ritz .

In 1940 he designed some pavilions for the Portuguese world exhibition "Expo Mundo Portugues". He took part in various group exhibitions. Semke was also active as a ceramic artist, creating not only artistic but also useful objects for everyday use.
