history
The name Ritz-Carlton goes back to the Swiss hotelier César Ritz (1850–1918), who ran the Ritz Paris from 1898 and the Carlton Hotel in London from 1899 ; however, the Ritz Paris is not part of the Ritz-Carlton chain and the Carlton has not existed since 1940. In 1905 the two names were first brought together for a restaurant on the America ship . In 1911 the first "Ritz-Carlton Hotel" was opened in New York City . Ritz created the Ritz-Carlton logo (lion and crown) from the British royal seal (crown) and the logo of a donor (lion).
The Ritz-Carlton Investing Company was founded in the United States around 1910 by Albert Keller, who bought the name and offered it for franchising . The first Ritz-Carlton Hotel in the United States opened in New York City in 1911 . The Ritz-Carlton Philadelphia followed in 1913, the Ritz-Carlton Montreal in 1912. In 1921, the Ritz-Carlton Atlantic City was opened by Keller. The Ritz-Carlton Boston opened in 1927 .
In 1951 only the Ritz-Carlton Boston was in operation. In 1964 Gerald F. Blakeley Jr. bought The Ritz-Carlton Boston .
In August 1983 Blakeley sold The Ritz-Carlton Boston and the US brand to William B. Johnson for $ 75.5 million. In 1988 Johnson acquired exclusive rights to The Ritz-Carlton brand around the world, with the exception of the Hôtel Ritz Paris, the Ritz-Carlton in Chicago and the Ritz-Carlton Montreal.
