In 2017, around 18 million visitors are expected. Sanya Airport reported 19.4 million passengers in 2017. High-rise apartment buildings and hotels dominate the cityscape. Almost every well-known hotel chain has a location in Sanya. There are cheap hostels as well as luxury hotels. The main focus of tourism is on three bays with extensive sandy beaches: Yalong Bay, Dadonghai Bay and Sanya Bay. All three bays are lined with hotels and apartments. Several diving spots make Sanya even more interesting: Sunny Bay, Dadonghai Beach, Baifu Bay, Wuzhihou Island, Yalong Bay and West Island. In addition to individual trips by private individuals, wedding tourism and business trips also play an important role. In order to protect the valuable natural resources in Sanya, a program was set up in January 2018 in which environmental offenders are to be blackened in exchange for a reward. A strong destination management for Sanya is working intensively on the further expansion of tourist use.
