Talent 3 ( spelling TALENT 3 ) is the name of a family of multiple units manufactured by Bombardier Transportation . The built in its third generation talent ( Ta LBOT le ichter N ahverkehrs- T rubbed car) was in the first generation in 1996 by the Aachen wagon factory Talbot built. In contrast to the Bombardier Talent 2, the multiple unit is not a new development, but a further development of the Talent 2, which the Talent 3 looks like. In contrast to the second generation, the Talent 3 not only complies with German, but also European standards.

The first trains of this type should be used by several railway companies in the course of 2019. Delayed deliveries and approvals forced everyone to change their plans. This resulted in frequent mention of the manufacturer and model in the media, which increased their level of awareness among rail customers.

technology

The Talent 3 are electric multiple units which, in addition to being supplied with power via overhead lines, can also be equipped with batteries and fuel cells for operation on non-electrified routes . The units can be delivered as S-Bahn, regional or long-distance trains; different car lengths and door arrangements are possible. The top speed of 160 km / h or 200 km / h can also be selected. The trains are for all four European electricity systems (1.5 and 3 kV equal and 15 kV, 16.7 Hz and 25 kV, 50 Hz AC voltage) and can be ordered as multi-system multiple units. The floor height can be adjusted to different platform heights (550, 760 and 960 mm). The multiple units can be equipped with the European train control system ETCS , they comply with TSI and European standards .

As with the previous two generations, the car bodies have outwardly curved side walls and thus an oval cross-section.

Orders

ÖBB

In a tender by ÖBB for a framework contract for 300 electric railcars, Bombardier Transportation won the Talent 3 against the Stadler Flirt and the Siemens Mireo . The framework contract includes half 75 and 100 meter long units. The framework agreement, which was concluded on December 27, 2016, has a value of 1.8 billion euros when all units are called up.

Vorarlberg

In the course of the signing of the framework agreement, the first call of 21 multiple units in the long version for the S-Bahn Vorarlberg , which are designated as the 4758 series. These trains should increase the capacity in Vorarlberg in order to be able to cope with the steady increase in passengers. With a length of 104.5 meters, the ÖBB Cityjets TALENT3, after the 4011 series with 185 meters, are the longest trains in the entire ÖBB-EMU fleet. The six-part electric multiple units offer around 300 seats and are approved for a top speed of 160 km / h. In order to guarantee entry at ground level, the Talent 3 multiple units with an entry height of 550 mm supplied. The trains are manufactured in Hennigsdorf, Germany , and cost around 150 million euros. The trains will be delivered in the Cityjet design of the ÖBB.

The introduction planned for April 2019 had to be postponed several times due to delays in approval. In July 2019, a first train copy was shown in Dornbirn and in October 2019 it was reported that the 21 locomotive sets had been completed and, provided their operating software is approved, will be put on track step by step from the beginning of April 2020. In November 2019, Bombardier named the first quarter of 2020 as the planned start of operations.

In June 2018, ÖBB ordered 25 more Talent 3 long versions for use in Tyrol and South Tyrol . These trains will have 316 seats. According to ÖBB, the Talent 3 will run according to schedule in Tyrol from August 2020. For operation on the route Innsbruck Hauptbahnhof - Brenner - Bozen - Merano - Mals , which will in future be served without transfer , six units for 15 kV at 16.7 Hz and 25 kV at 50 Hz alternating and 3 kV direct voltage. From 2021 they are to run together with the Stadler Flirt from SAD Nahverkehr and Trenitalia between Austria and Italy. The entry height is 600 mm. The trains are delivered in an adapted Cityjet design. With this design, the stripes of the normal Cityjet design below the windows are designed as a mountain silhouette, the area above, except for a black ribbon window, is designed in white with space for logos of the ÖBB, the state of Tyrol and the ÖBB brand cityjet.

STA

In 2019, the South Tyrolean transport structures STA ordered 7 six-part Talent 3s for cross-border transport to Austria. The trains are capable of three systems and like 6 of the ÖBB sets for Tyrol for tensions of 15 kV at 16.7 Hz and 25 kV at 50 Hz alternating and 3 kV direct voltage. Despite the public ownership, the Talent 3 trains will be operated by SAD Nahverkehr as well as Trenitalia (in Italy) and ÖBB (in Austria). In addition to enough space for wheelchairs, bicycles and winter sports equipment in the multi-purpose areas, the trains are also equipped with sockets. There is also an option for 25 additional sets.

vlexx

For operation in lot 2 of the E-Netz-Saar-RB, the private transport company vlexx ordered 21 three-part Talent 3 multiple units. The regional trains, which are equipped with three passenger doors on each side, are to offer space for 160 people in first and second class. The trains should be used from 2019 on the RB lines Saarbrücken - Neubrücke, Saarbrücken - Neunkirchen / Saar - Homburg and Homburg - Illingen and from 2024 after electrification on the RB line Saarbrücken - Lebach-Jabach.

The manufacturer announced in June 2019 that only 6 of the 21 ordered units will be available when the system is scheduled to start in December 2019. The delivery is to be delayed until mid-2020. Until then, replacement trains of the 425 and 426 series are to be used. After the end of operations by DB Regio, these will be transferred to Saarland and rented to vlexx.

SWEG

As part of winning the tender for the Freiburg S-Bahn Y of the Breisgau S-Bahn with the lines S2 Freiburg Hbf - Elzach, S3 Bad Krozingen - Münstertal (Black Forest) and the S5 Riegel-Malterdingen - Breisach, the SWEG ordered 12 Talent 3 trains from Bombardier . Three and four-piece sets in black and white country design were ordered.

The SWEG planned to use the ordered Talent 3 multiple units from December 2019 on the so-called Freiburger-Y for passenger transport. Due to delivery delays, Bombardier's trains could not be delivered on time, which required an emergency plan. For the time being, the old Regio Shuttle railcars ran on all routes . From June 14, 2020, SWEG was able to rely on new three-part multiple units on the section between Bad-Krozingen and Münstertal (Black Forest). No trains have been running on the Elztalbahn since March 1st due to modernization work . There, SWEG is hoping that the new Talent 3 multiple units will go into operation synchronously with the completion of the modernization work in mid-December 2020. Primarily four-part trains will run on the S2. The commissioning of the electric multiple units on the S5 is planned for spring 2021.

Abellio Rail Baden-Württemberg

Between 2016 and 2018, the state authority for rail vehicles Baden-Württemberg placed four orders in the BW model, each with 26 three- and five-part Talent multiple units, which are used by Abellio Rail Baden-Württemberg in the Stuttgart network . Since the Talent 2 trains have been further developed (including with modified software), approval by the Federal Railway Authority was necessary. As elsewhere, the manufacturer was unable to approve and deliver the required number of trains by the start of operations on June 9, 2019. Abellio therefore rented 15 vehicles from DB Regio at short notice, and was only able to cover a basic cycle with 10 Talent 2 vehicles from September 2019. In January 2020, against the background of a further lack of deliveries, it was reported that Abellio was "not very optimistic" that all trains ordered will actually be available by June 2020.

In July 2020, an order to equip the multiple units with ETCS and ATO was put out to tender . The trains should u. a. Level 3 capable, equipped with train integrity monitoring and prepared for FRMCS . The project is scheduled to start in January 2021 and run until December 2027. The equipping of a first multiple unit (first in class) is to begin in October 2021, and test and preliminary operations will begin in April 2024. All vehicles are to be equipped with ETCS Level 2 (according to Baseline 3 Release 2 ) and ATO (with static timetable data) by January 2025 . In the years 2026 and 2027, the continuous commissioning and approval according to TSI ZZS 2022 , including further "innovations", should take place.

Battery drive

At the InnoTrans 2018 a talent was presented with three additional drive battery and the Innovation Award of the December 2018 State of Brandenburg awarded. The railcar has lithium-ion traction batteries on the roof. The range of the prototype is 40 kilometers in battery operation, the aim for series production is 100 kilometers. The batteries can be charged from the catenary while driving and when the vehicle is stationary, and energy can also be recovered using the regenerative brake . A charging process at charging points or under catenary takes ten minutes. After test drives, a twelve-month test run was to take place at DB ZugBus Regionalverkehr Alb-Bodensee in mid-2019 , which was scientifically supported by the TU Berlin. The start of test operations on two routes near Ulm was postponed because the manufacturer first had to ensure that Talent trains were approved for the Stuttgart regional network .
