SAD Nahverkehr AG buses at the bus station in Bolzano

The SAD transport AG / SAD Trasporto locale ( German : Südtiroler Automotive Service AG / Italian : Società Automobilistica Dolomiti SpA ), based in Bolzano ( South Tyrol , Italy ) is a private provider of services of public transport.

SAD Nahverkehr AG operates most of the overland bus routes in South Tyrol, the Renon cable car and the Jenesien cable car . As a railway company (EVU), SAD Nahverkehr AG operates all trains on the Vinschgaubahn , the Mendelbahn and the Rittner Bahn, as well as some of the scheduled trains on the Bolzano – Merano , Brennerbahn and Pustertalbahn .

SAD Nahverkehr AG is part of the South Tyrol transport association .

As an EVU, SAD works with the Austrian Federal Railways and has been running trains between Bolzano and Innsbruck since the 2013/14 timetable change and between Franzensfeste and Lienz since 2014/15 .

As an EVU, SAD was also responsible for the traction of DB motorail trains on Italian territory. The locomotives ( Siemens ES64F4 ) were rented from MRCE. These trains with vehicle transport are no longer available.

The abbreviation SAD comes from the former company name Südtiroler Automobildienst or Italian: Servizio Autobus Dolomiti. The name is still in use in South Tyrol, but also in local traffic.

Railway vehicles

SAD uses six-car multiple units of the Stadler Flirt type on the electrified railway lines . The Stadler GTW 2/6 multiple units operate on the not yet electrified Vinschgau Railway . After the electrification of the Vinschgau Railway has been completed in 2020, Stadler Flirt will be used across the board. The seven additional vehicles required for this were already procured in 2017.

The vehicles must be able to run on routes with different contact line voltages. The Brennerbahn uses 15 kV alternating voltage with a frequency of 16.7 Hz between Innsbruck and Brenner, while south of Brenner it is electrified with 3 kV direct voltage like the Pustertalbahn and the Bozen – Meran railway line. The Vinschgau Railway will be equipped with 25 kV AC voltage at 50 Hz. The multiple unit 202 was used for test drives below 25 kV in 2016.

The vehicles must also be able to use different train control systems in Italy ( SCMT ) and Austria ( PZB ). As part of the electrification, the Vinschgau Railway will be equipped with the ETCS train control system. The seven multiple units acquired in 2017 are already equipped with ETCS on-board equipment. Five existing multiple units are to be converted accordingly.
