The Bolzano railway station ( Italian Stazione di Bolzano , Ladin Stazion de Bulsan ) with 5.5 million passengers per year, the most important station in the region Trentino-Alto Adige in Italy . Bolzano , the capital of South Tyrol , is an important traffic junction on the north-south axis of the Brenner Railway , which connects Innsbruck with Verona . In addition, the Bolzano – Merano railway begins at the Bolzano train station, which means that it functions as a separation station .

location

The train station is located at an altitude of 265  m in the northeast of the Bolzano basin between the historic center and the Eisack . The nearby old town, the central Waltherplatz and the government district opposite the reception building can be reached quickly from here . However , there is no access to the Bozner Boden district to the east , which the train station separates from the rest of the city.

history

In 1859 the route of the Brenner Railway from Verona through the Adige Valley to Bolzano was put into operation. The train station built at that time was called Bozen-Gries train station , but was located in the municipality of Zwölfmalgrei . From 1867 the route between Bolzano and Innsbruck through the Eisack and Wipp valleys could also be used. In 1881 the Bolzano – Merano railway finally followed . From 1898 to 1974 the Überetscher Bahn to Kaltern also had its starting point at Bozen train station. The connection to local public transport was provided by the Bolzano tram from 1909 to 1948 and the Bolzano section of the Renon Railway from 1907 to 1966 .

The station designed by Alois Negrelli opened in 1859. The city map for the area, which was implemented with four streets radiating out from the station square, is a work of Sebastian Altmann . During the fascist era , Angiolo Mazzoni oversaw the redesign of the reception building, which was inaugurated in 1928. Mazzoni was also responsible for several structural adaptations and extensions. The reception building suffered severe damage in the Second World War , which, however, could be removed quickly. In the 2000s, the station was rebuilt by the operator Centostazioni .

Plans to rebuild large parts of the extensive station area have been under discussion for years, as many of the more than two dozen parallel tracks and various functional buildings are now idle. The railway line is also to be relocated slightly to the south towards Eisack.

Buildings

The reception building , built according to plans by Negrelli in the style inventory of Viennese neoclassicism , is well preserved in its historical substance in the central wing and is impressively presented in the urban context. Mazzoni added a façade with a strong plasticity divided by eight half-columns . Mazzoni's work also includes various structural additions, in particular the striking tower northeast of the reception building.

The station was given an artistic design through various works by Franz Ehrenhöfer : On the facade are two statues depicting allegories of mechanical (male, right-hand side as seen from the station square) and electrical power (female, left-hand side). His works also include the masks on the ledge, a Christophorus fountain, and an allegory of the rivers of South Tyrol above the entrance to the station tower.

The historic buildings have been under monument protection since 1997.
