The Köln Messe / Deutz (until November 2004: station Köln-Deutz ) is a station of the Deutsche Bahn in rechtsrheinischen Cologne district of Deutz . The crossing station with ten platform tracks  - like Cologne Central Station on the left bank of the Rhine - is one of the 21 stations in the highest price class  1 from DB Station & Service .

It is fair station near the koelnmesse and transfer point between distance passenger ( Inter City Express ) and -nahverkehr ( regional train / regional express and the commuter trains in Cologne ). For public transport the Cologne transporting enterprises (KVB) is underground in the nearby Station U Deutz / Messe of rail Cologne are changed.

Köln Messe / Deutz is also a tower station : the high-lying part with the operating points Köln Messe / Deutz and Köln Messe / Deutz Hp (for S-Bahn) lead the trains over the Hohenzollern Bridge to Cologne Central Station. In the Cologne Messe / Deutz (low) part , only long-distance connections that serve the high-speed route Cologne – Rhine / Main and do not go to the main station normally stop .

A direct connection for those transferring to Cologne Central Station by means of a cable car over the Rhine is always under discussion.

Predecessor structures

Today's Köln Messe / Deutz station developed from several predecessor constructs from 1845 onwards and its basic structure was opened on November 11, 1913. It gradually replaced the four passenger stations of the competing railway companies Cologne-Mindener Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft (CME) and Bergisch-Märkische Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft (BME).

On December 20, 1845, in anticipation of an imminent Rhine bridge or at least a steam ferry across the Rhine to the Trankgasse station opposite with a connection to Aachen and Antwerp, a terminal station of the Cologne-Mindener Railway Company was built as the starting point of the route to Düsseldorf southwest of today's station near the Rhine . In addition, two continuous tracks to the Rhine can be seen on old plans. The line was later expanded via Duisburg and Dortmund to Minden and connected to a connection to Berlin.

In 1859 the station also became the starting point of the Deutz-Gießener Railway, which was under construction. At the same time, the first fixed bridge over the Rhine since Roman times, the Dombrücke or, more popularly, “Muusfall”, was built between Deutz and Cologne to connect the railway lines on the right and left of the Rhine . The old station facilities were expanded and through platforms on the new route were added. The passenger trains stopped at the Deutz terminus, while the supraregional courier and express trains continued to Cologne Central Station. An originally planned simple transfer station for the destinations Deutz, Cologne, Minden and Gießen in the also newly built Deutzerfeld marshalling and storage yard was not carried out any further.

On October 1, 1886, the platforms of the Cologne-Minden terminus, built in 1845, were closed and passenger trains were directed to the Bergisch-Märkischen Schiffbrücke station. Until the redesign of the Deutz railway systems, in particular the construction of the Deutzerfeld marshalling and storage yard between 1911 and 1913, the old terminal station was mainly used as a freight yard.

New Deutz main station

In 1913, following the nationalization of the railways ( Prussian State Railways , PSE), the Bergisch-Märkische railway stations, "Deutzer Feld" and "Schiffbrücke", were also dismantled and their lines connected to the new Deutz Hauptbahnhof. The former station "Deutzer Feld", sometimes also called Deutz-Nord, was in the area of the later Cologne trade fair (today RTL building), while the Schiffbrücke station, also known as the bridge station, was on the Rhine at the ship bridge to Cologne. The name “Deutzer Feld” was later transferred to the Cologne-Deutzerfeld marshalling and storage yard further east .

National Socialism and World War II

During National Socialism , almost all Jews living in Cologne were deported via the Deutz-Tief train station . The first transport left here in October 1941, the last known was sent to the Theresienstadt concentration camp on October 1, 1944 . The exhibition halls each served as a collection warehouse.

The three-aisled platform hall made of iron and glass elements, which was destroyed in the Second World War, was replaced by concrete platform roofs after the war. Parts of the tunnels and the entire station forecourt ( Ottoplatz ) are entered in the monuments list of the city of Cologne.

Expansion to the ICE train station

From 1988 the city of Cologne developed concepts for the reorganization of ICE traffic in the Cologne area as part of the planned high-speed route to Frankfurt. The core of the planning was the use of the Köln-Deutz train station as an ICE train station.

The City Council of Cologne (other source: the board of directors of Deutsche Bahn AG ) decided in 1996 to expand the Deutz train station into an Intercity Express terminal. At the end of 1997, Deutsche Bahn laid the course of some new ICE lines on the planned high-speed line Cologne-Rhine / Main by the Deutz station.

In December 1997 the board of directors of Deutsche Bahn decided to expand the station in several stages.

When koelnmesse finally decided in 1998 to build a new building for the administration, a public-private partnership was established in 1999 with the participation of DB Station & Service , the city and koelnmesse.

For an international architectural competition for the ICE terminal Cologne-Messe / Deutz, 57 proposals were submitted. Both urban planning and traffic aspects had to be taken into account . Eight participants were selected for the final round. The area to be designed comprised 22 hectares and 150,000 square meters of usable space. The planned measures also included an extension and adaptation of the two underground platforms for ICE traffic as well as the double-track expansion of the access route. An expansion to four ICE platforms was considered. An 800-meter-long, covered treadmill was also planned to connect the train station with Cologne Central Station. This procedure, carried out jointly by DB, the City of Cologne and KölnMesse, was completed in 2000. In October 2000 the planning approval procedure for the expansion was initiated. The planned costs for the overall concept of 140 million Deutschmarks were raised by Deutsche Bahn, the city of Cologne and the exhibition company. A glass roof with an edge length of 120 meters, which should span the entire station, was calculated with a further 40 million DM.

On November 8, 2001, preparatory measures for the modernization of underground platforms 11 and 12 began. From the start of operations on the new line (December 2002), one train per hour in each direction should be able to pass the main station via the renewed system. Later this number should be increased to three to four. 10.9 million euros were invested in the modernization of the two outer platforms of the underground station and other measures.

The station was called Köln-Deutz until December 11, 2004 , but was then renamed at the initiative of koelnmesse, whose premises are located directly at the station. The cost of this was borne by koelnmesse, as it hoped the renaming would have a marketing effect. Since November 3, 2006, the fair has been directly connected to the train station via the newly built south entrance.

In 2009 the station was awarded the Sour Lemon due to its ailing condition , a prize for particularly unsuccessful buildings that spoil the cityscape and is awarded by the Cologne Tourist Office. A comprehensive renovation then took place including the award-winning redesign of Ottoplatz . There is no planning date yet for the measures for accessibility.

Today the train station is the most important in the cathedral city after the main train station and includes three operating points:

The Cologne Messe / Deutz office consists of six tracks on three platforms and the two platform-free through tracks 3 and 6 in an elevated position.

Right next to it, also in an elevated position, is the Cologne Messe / Deutz Hp branch with two S-Bahn tracks on its own platform, which was built as part of the expansion of the Cologne S-Bahn main line (1985 to 1990) and the associated new construction of the third part of the bridge the Hohenzollern Bridge was built. The S-Bahn stop is part of Cologne Central Station, as are the Hansaring and Trimbornstraße stops .

The Cologne Messe / Deutz (deep) operating point was completely rebuilt during the construction of the high-speed line Cologne – Rhine / Main . Scheduled ICE trains on lines 10 (Berlin - Cologne / Bonn Airport ) and 41 ( Essen - Munich ) stop at two tracks. These drive directly north or south without having to go to the main train station, in order to save having to cross the Hohenzollern Bridge twice and change direction.

The access from the north to Cologne Messe / Deutz (deep) was expanded to two tracks by December 2007, and the maximum speed limit was raised to 100 km / h. In order to be able to carry out the reconstruction, the underground station was taken out of service from December 10, 2006 to December 8, 2007. The connection to the south to the Gummersbacher Straße junction was initially single-track and was supplemented by a second track at the beginning of 2010.

The station directory is listed as KKDZ (Köln Messe / Deutz) or KKDT (Köln Messe / Deutz (deep)), and the S-Bahn stop is listed as KKDZB (Köln Messe / Deutz Hp).

Planning

In a resolution of the Rhineland Local Transport Association (NVR) it was determined that the Cologne Messe / Deutz train station should be retrofitted with four lifts to enable barrier-free access to all platforms (so far only tracks 9 to 11 are barrier-free). So that track 12 in the underground station can also be reached barrier-free (and without the previous major detours from the direction of the urban railway tunnel), an additional access from the urban railway tunnel to platform 12 is to be built. At the end of 2018, it was said that several years would pass before comprehensive accessibility was achieved. The performance of the S-Bahn tracks between the main train station and Messe / Deutz is to be increased by 30 percent through ETCS and platform extensions.

At a rail summit between the railways, the federal government and the state of North Rhine-Westphalia on March 31, 2010 in Düsseldorf , it was decided that the station should be expanded for 11 million euros by 2019. Towards the fair, the station is to be expanded by an outer S-Bahn platform in order to speed up boarding and alighting. However, it is still being checked whether two new S-Bahn tracks will be needed, as is planned at the main station.

There are also plans to stop long-distance traffic in Cologne in just one long-distance train station. As a future long-distance train station , Cologne Messe / Deutz performs better than the main train station, as all long-distance trains stopping at the main station run through Cologne Messe / Deutz without stopping and the long-distance trains that stop in Cologne Messe / Deutz all run on the right bank of the Rhine and therefore not over the Hohenzollern Bridge drive into the main station.

Considerations to lead long-distance traffic increasingly via the Messe / Deutz station in order to relieve the main station will not be pursued further.
