The Köln-Holweide stop is a stop on the Cologne-Mülheim – Lindlar railway line, which is no longer fully operated , located in the Cologne district of Holweide and is served by the Cologne S-Bahn via the S 11 line.
history
The creation of the Holweider Haltpunkt is very closely related to football. In the early 1950s, what was then SC Preußen Dellbrück played successfully for the German championship. Many football fans also came from Holweide. And so it was obvious that they wanted to comfortably board the special trains to the away games. The Holweider fans applied for a stop on the Cologne-Mülheim-Bensberg railway , which was opened in 1868 by the Bergisch-Märkische Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft .
They found support from the then chairman of Prussia Dellbrück, Willy Röhrig. He worked with the Deutsche Bundesbahn to ensure that a stop could be created. The Bundesbahn accommodated the request on the condition that a provisional ramp had to be built for getting on and off. This was not an obstacle for Willy Röhrig because he was a building contractor. He had a breakpoint built in a very short time. The Bundesbahn recognized this and let the trains stop there from 1950. Even after the football games, the trains stopped there as planned, and so the Holweider stop was born. In the vernacular, the stop was later called "Willy-Röhrig-Gedächtnisbahnhof".
In order to take account of the increase in commuter traffic from Bergisch Gladbach to Cologne and the resulting denser timetable, the Federal Railroad decided to set up an S-Bahn service. After the start of the electrification of the route and the expansion according to the S-Bahn standard from 1972, an S-Bahn line from Bergisch Gladbach to Cologne-Chorweiler could be started in 1975 .
Location and structure
The stop at Köln-Holweide is located on the northern edge of the district, directly on the boundary with Köln-Höhenhaus, in the middle of a residential area. The station has two 76 centimeter high side platforms. Freight traffic in the direction of Bergisch Gladbach stands in the way of expansion to a height of 96 centimeters. Ground-level entrances on each side and stairs with underpasses for pedestrians and cyclists at both ends round off the facility. On the eastern side there is also a bus stop for line 157 of the Cologne transport company .
With its location between the two districts of Holweide and Höhenhaus, the station has an important function for development and has a fast transport connection to Cologne Central Station with the S-Bahn .
