The stop in Cologne Geldernstraße / Parkgürtel is a stop with two platform tracks and two S-Bahn lines. There are two underground lines for the Cologne transport company .

At the stop, the Cologne S-Bahn lines S 6 in the direction of Cologne-Worringen via Cologne-Longerich and Cologne-Chorweiler and the S 11 in the direction of Neuss on the left-hand Lower Rhine route . In the other direction, the S 6 goes to Essen via Cologne Central Station and Düsseldorf Central Station and the S 11 to Bergisch Gladbach via Cologne Central Station and Cologne-Mülheim .

The stop is served by twelve trains every hour on weekdays and is therefore  classified in station category 4 by DB Station & Service . The S-Bahn stops here at a 213 meter long central platform.

History of the S-Bahn

As part of the construction of the Cologne S-Bahn , a branch line from Cologne-Longerich on the left-hand Lower Rhine line via Cologne-Chorweiler to Cologne-Chorweiler North was opened on June 1, 1975 . In this context, the stop in Cologne Geldernstrasse / Parkgürtel was reopened.

Since the timetable change on December 14, 2014, the S-Bahn line S 6 has also been running via the Chorweiler loop to Cologne-Worringen instead of to Köln-Nippes and ends there.

In 2013 the way to the stop was redeveloped. New lamps and more powerful lights were installed. The walls to the bus stop and to Geldernstrasse were repainted and the path was secured with higher poles. The escalators to the tram stop have been replaced and modernized. On December 13, 2015, DB Regio introduced the RE 6a line, thus supplementing the RE 6 . It drove every hour from Düsseldorf main station to Cologne / Bonn Airport . In mid-April 2016, the RE 6a stopped for two weeks at the Geldernstrasse / Parkgürtel stop due to construction work at Cologne Central Station. After completion of the work, the Verkehrsclub Deutschland (VCD), the neighbors 60 and the Green Cologne-Nippes campaigned for the line to stop permanently at the stop. They referred to the fact that travel time to Düsseldorf is up to 40 minutes shorter than that of the S-Bahn. On December 11, 2016, the RE 6a was merged with the RE 6.

History underground

The underground station was built in 1974 when the belt line was expanded. Due to a heavy rain event on July 19, 2017, the entire underground station was flooded with water.

The media report serious damage. While a technical train and two water damage / pumps specialist groups from the Technical Relief Organization (THW) were pumping the water out of the rail tunnel, the stop was closed. The KVB line 13 ran from Holweide Vischeringstraße to Slabystraße or Nussbaumerstraße to Sülzgürtel . A replacement bus was also discontinued between Wiener Platz and Nussbaumerstraße during that time . On July 20, 2017, the railway line returned to its usual route. Nevertheless, there was no change of passengers in either direction at the Geldernstraße / Parkgürtel stop. Meanwhile, a replacement rail service ran between Escher Strasse and Neusser Strasse / Gürtel . The Kölner Verkehrs-Betriebe reported that a transformer had been flooded by the water and that the technology was therefore not working. Cleaning work was carried out between July 31, 2017 and August 4, 2017, in the night from 12:27 a.m. to 1:35 a.m. During that time, the line 13 between Mülheim Wiener Platz and Venloer Straße / Gürtel was replaced by a replacement bus. Line 13 was diverted from Mülheim, as part of line 18, via the main station and then, as part of line 5, to Cologne-Ehrenfeld . From there, the 13 went back on the actual route to the Sülzgürtel and back. The Kölner Verkehrs-Betriebe provisionally released the stop on August 7, 2017, and boarding and alighting was possible again. The use of escalators was not yet possible. As of November 3, 2017, the transport company was able to put the escalators back into operation after more than three months.
