history

Langel already existed as a small fishing village in the Middle Ages. Since that time, Langel and Rheinkassel have been jointly managed as a condominium by the Electorate of Cologne and the Duchy of Jülich-Berg . In 1688 a whale was sighted in the Rhine near Langel . This event was recorded in a leaflet from 1698. The ferry between Langel and Hitdorf was first mentioned in a document in 1729 . In 1794 the place was occupied by French revolutionary troops and completely new administrative units emerged: Langel became part of the Mairie Worringen in the canton of Dormagen in the Arrondissement de Cologne in the Département de la Roer . In 1815 Langel came to the Kingdom of Prussia . A year later the place became part of the new mayor's office in Worringen in the Cologne district. In 1882 there was a bad flood and the dam broke between the Rheinkassel and Langel. With the incorporation of the mayor's office in Worringen on April 1, 1922, the small Rhine town of Langel also became part of the city of Cologne. Langel was hit by a severe flood on January 1, 1926.

Towards the end of the Second World War on March 5, 1945, American troops occupied the place, while it was still being shelled by German artillery on the right bank of the Rhine. On July 15, 1954, Rheinkassel, Langel, Kasselberg and Feldkassel belonged to the Fühlingen district. However, fellowship with Feelings was short-lived. Since October 7, 1963, the towns of Rheinkassel, Langel, Kasselberg and Feldkassel have been part of the Cologne-Merkenich district. With the municipal territorial reform on January 1, 1975, Rheinkassel, Langel, Kasselberg and Feldkassel are part of the borough of Chorweiler.
