Location of Hitdorf in Leverkusen

Hitdorf is a district of Leverkusen .

location

The image of the village is shaped by the Rhine and the St. Stephanus church . Hitdorf borders the Rhine in the southwest, the Leverkusen district of Rheindorf in the southeast and Monheim in the north . The border with Langenfeld is a little northeast of Hitdorf. Due to its location directly on the Rhine, Hitdorf is at risk of flooding, but there is a flood protection wall.

history

Hitdorf was first mentioned in 1151 as Huttorp and the Rhine port of Hitdorf was first mentioned in writing in 1252. Hitdorf has belonged to the Monheim office in the Duchy of Berg since the Middle Ages . In 1341 the place even became the seat of a regional court for the parish of Rheindorf. The Hitdorf ferry law was first recorded in 1633. During the Napoleonic era, the small Rhine village came to the Mairie Monheim in the canton of Richrath in the arrondissement of Düsseldorf in the Rhine department in the Grand Duchy of Berg . 1815 Hitdorf came with the Grand Duchy of Berg to the Kingdom of Prussia and was initially a part of the circle Opladen in the administrative district of Dusseldorf . In 1840 the Catholic parish of Hitdorf was founded. In 1857 Hitdorf received city rights . Together with Rheindorf, the place formed an administrative union since 1897. On December 1, 1905, Hitdorf had 1,810 inhabitants. In 1931 the Rheindorf office was dissolved. Rheindorf was incorporated into the city of Leverkusen. Hitdorf was now initially an independent town in the Rhein-Wupper district . Finally, in 1960, the place became part of the municipality of Monheim. Hitdorf has been part of the city of Leverkusen since January 1st, 1975.

Flood protection

With the support of the state, a construction project was completed at the end of 2010 that extends over a length of 900 meters and closes the gap to the Rhine. A flood wall was built for ten million euros. The country bore a large part of the costs with a grant of six million euros.

Structure in three parts

On the stretch between Fährstrasse and Werftstrasse, a 27-meter-deep cut-off wall was installed underground. It is intended to prevent the underflow of the area. It cannot be seen from above. A massive wall one and a half meters high is placed on top of it above ground. So that it fits into the terrain, it was partially greened and clinkered.

If there is a risk of flooding, the mobile part of the structure comes into play: an aluminum wall. It can be built up to two meters high, adapted to the water level.

Economy and Infrastructure

Industry

In 1765 the first tobacco company in Hitdorf was founded by Johann Peter Dorff. The Dorff house of the company founder, known in Hitdorf, which was built in 1791, is now a listed building and can be viewed from the outside on Langenfelder Strasse. In 1816 the company was taken over by the son from his first marriage, Jakob Dorff. Later, the son Wilhelm Dorff I inherited after the death of his father in 1849, under which the company experienced its peak. In 1915, after the childless death of Wilhelm Dorff II in 1910, the widow who stayed behind sold the factory to the manufacturer Lorenz Cremer.

The second Hitdorf tobacco and cigar factory "Tobacco & Cigar Fabrication Caspers - Neess" was founded in 1796 by the Caspers brothers. The property of the Caspers and Neess families, built in 1666, is still standing today and currently houses a bed and breakfast hotel and a gallery with contemporary art.

The brewery followed in 1833 and the match factory in 1843. All three businesses no longer exist locally. The European headquarters of the automobile manufacturer Mazda is located in Hitdorf . A central warehouse of the Rossmann company is on the site of the former Bayer nursery. The most important local employers are Chempark Leverkusen and the city administration.

In disagreement with the city, Rossmann gave up the logistics center he opened five years ago because of a dispute over the storage of water-polluting substances. The legal processing of the dispute is still ongoing. The city has appealed against a first ruling by the Cologne regional court, in which claims for damages by the drugstore (11.7 million euros) were partially justified. According to Korth, the items that are to be housed in Hitdorf in the future are not critical with regard to the water protection area around the building: Essentially, electrical appliances and telecommunications items are to be stored there. The number of trucks arriving and departing daily will also decrease compared to the use by Rossmann. According to the ITC, a total of 70 people could be employed in Hitdorf.

According to Korth, his company has signed a so-called purchase agreement with Rossmann, in other words: Both sides agree that the property with a view of the Rhine should change hands. However, this means that ITC could withdraw from the agreement if the plan should not be approved by the location in Leverkusen. Already weeks ago the fear was expressed behind closed doors that in this case another multi-million dollar lawsuit could come to the city. But at the moment it doesn't look like it - after all, those involved are optimistic that the future of the logistics center will now be secured in the long term.

traffic

The Leverkusen-Rheindorf junction of the A59 motorway is south of Hitdorf . There is a Rhine ferry that runs between Cologne-Langel and Hitdorf. This is particularly popular with traffic jams on the A1 motorway bridge between Wiesdorf and Cologne-Merkenich.
