St. Stephanus (Hitdorf)
The Catholic Church of St. Stephanus in Leverkusen - Hitdorf was built in 1887 and characterizes the townscape.
history
The church was built in 1887 with a tower and initially had a rather asymmetrical appearance. A place was chosen for the construction that was safely protected from flooding. The second tower, which gives the church its symmetrical appearance today, was added later.
The bells of the church were all melted down during the First World War and the Second World War and were only re-procured in the post-war period. This church was taken as a model for the construction of the St. Stephen's Church in Bürrig , the nave being the main model.
St. Stephen was the end of 2011 parish church of the same parish . On January 1, 2012, the parish with St. Aldegundis (Rheindorf) and Zum Heiligen Kreuz (Rheindorf) became the new parish “St. Aldegundis ”. It belongs to the pastoral care area Rheindorf / Hitdorf in the dean's office Leverkusen ( Archdiocese of Cologne ). The St. Aldegundis Church became the parish church of this parish.
The 19th century Antonius Chapel in Hitdorf also belongs to the parish .
