Holy Cross Church

The Church of the Holy Cross is a Catholic church in the Leverkusen district of Rheindorf .

history

The Church of the Holy Cross was built in 1967/68 according to a design by Josef Lehmbrock . The church has an irregular octagonal plan. The prismatic outer skin of the tower-free and bell-less building with a tent-like roof structure is formed by concrete glass blocks, which are also to be understood as lighting elements inside the church.

The construction of the church creates a support-free space. This allows an absolutely clear view of the altar from all sides. The walls were designed by Düsseldorf professor Günter Grote from 3,606 prefabricated concrete blocks, in which small windows of various sizes and 24 colors are embedded.

The free-standing bell tower planned together with the sacred building did not get beyond the planning phase and the architect's draft and was never built. Thus there is neither a tower nor a bell.

The last major renovation work took place in 2008 and included cleaning all molded concrete blocks and exposed concrete surfaces, sealing them with a colorless protective coating, cleaning the roof structure, repairing the molded stones and their glass panes, renovating the sacristy and other work.

Of the Holy Cross by the end of 2011 was the parish church of the same parish . On January 1, 2012, the parish with St. Aldegundis (Rheindorf) and St. Stephanus (Hitdorf) became the new parish “St. Aldegundis ”. It belongs to the pastoral care area Rheindorf / Hitdorf in the dean's office Leverkusen ( Archdiocese of Cologne ). The St. Aldegundis Church became the parish church of this parish.

organ

Due to the construction of the church, a conventional pipe organ could only be realized at immense expense and major modifications. For this reason, an electronic organ has always performed this task. A three-manual digital organ from Kisselbach with 53 sounding registers has been sounding since 2009.

Others

The church is known beyond its parish borders for its nativity scene. It is regularly approached and viewed by tour groups on crib tours.
