history

The Rheindorf, first mentioned in 1115, became the seat of a customs office in 1705 . The Church of St. Aldegundis was built in the 12th century. Rheindorf has belonged to the Monheim office in the Duchy of Berg since the Middle Ages . During the French period , Rheindorf came to the Mairie Monheim in the canton of Richrath in the arrondissement of Düsseldorf in the department of Rhine in the Grand Duchy of Berg . From 1815 Rheindorf belonged to the Kingdom of Prussia and came to the district of Opladen in the administrative district of Düsseldorf . The Wambach, Rötsche and Butterheide residential areas also belonged to the municipality of Rheindorf. In 1832 the place had 771 inhabitants. A few years later the place became part of the Solingen district . After all, Rheindorf had been the seat of a mayor's office since 1897, which was administered in personal union with the city of Hitdorf .

On April 1, 1930, the communities Rheindorf, Schlebusch and Steinbüchel and the then city of Wiesdorf merged to form the new city of Leverkusen . It had 42,000 inhabitants.

Today the old Rheindorf village center contrasts with historic houses and winding streets with high-rise settlements from the post-war period in the north of the district.
