The GGS Star School was a primary school in the Leverkusen district of Rheindorf . As a European school , one focus of the educational work was on the cultural diversity of the students. Under the school motto “Diversity is the future - diversity as an opportunity and enrichment”, children from around thirty different cultures attended the lessons. The name Star School is linked to the stars of the European flag and the European Union's guiding principle : "United in diversity".

history

The school was founded on May 30, 1963 under the name Schule Elbestraße . Due to the rapid growth of the Rheindorf district of Leverkusen in the late 1960s, the school was run in eight classes with 32 classes and up to 1,342 students. During this time it was the largest primary school in North Rhine-Westphalia . In 1978 the name was changed to the Masurenstrasse Community Primary School . Since 2007 it has been run as a two-class primary school. In 2009 the decision was made to change the name to Star School based on the European flag and the motto “United in Diversity”. All-day care has also been offered as part of the open all-day school since 2009 . In April 2011, the star school was awarded the European School Certificate .

In 2011, 197 children attended the Leverkusen star school . They were taught by ten teachers, two trainee teachers, a social pedagogue and a special education teacher. As part of the open all-day school , childcare is offered in the afternoon with lunch, help with homework and various groups.

At the end of the 2016/2017 school year, the GGS Star School was closed with a big celebration and then joined forces with the then dandelion school (today's GGS Am Friedenspark ) on Netzestrasse. Most of the staff as well as the students of the star school were allowed to continue their primary education in the building of the dandelion school. However, the old building was not demolished. Due to renovation work in the nearby Käthe Kollwitz comprehensive school , most of the school had to be housed in the old rooms of the star school.

European school

The star school was awarded the European School certificate on April 8, 2011 by the Ministry for Schools and Further Education of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, taking into account nationwide criteria. In this context, five foreign languages, letter partnerships in other countries, international projects and competitions, festivals and celebrations as well as initiatives to deal with diversity and diversity were offered at the star school. The work with parents was supported with language courses and a parents' café.

Classes at the Leverkusen Star School were held in separate classes. The length of stay of the children in the school entry phase (grades 1 and 2) was one to three years. The opportunities for action and education for children should be expanded by using the computer as a new medium in and alongside lessons. Computers were available in every class for this purpose. There is also a computer room with ten workstations. At the end of their primary school career, the children received a PC pass.

Methods according to Heinz Klippert were used in daily lessons and in annual Klippert days with the aim of imparting key competencies to students and leading them to independent learning. In the classes, the "reading pleasure" was promoted through numerous activities. All classes regularly visited the student library. Reading and newspaper projects and participation in competitions also motivated everyday school life with the aim of continuing to promote and develop the reading motivation and reading skills of the students.
