The Köln-Nippes train station is mainly located in the Nippes district of the same name in Cologne . It is located on the Cologne - Krefeld - Kleve railway and various connecting lines. The part of the station Köln-Nippes Pbf served by the Cologne S-Bahn is located in the neighboring district of Bilderstöckchen . Today there are only a few meters of track in the Nippes district.

Location and structure

The station comprises several parts of the station . In addition to the actual Köln-Nippes train station (KKN), these are (as of 2016) the train station parts Köln-Nippes Bez 1 (KKN B), Köln-Nippes Bez 4 (KKN G), Köln-Nippes Etzelstraße Abzw (KKN E), Cologne -Nippes Nf (KKN N), Köln-Nippes Pbf (KKN P) and Köln-Nippes turning system (KKN W). The station parts Bez 1, Bez 4 and Nf are located at the level of the former marshalling yard and today's storage yard on the VzG route 2615 ( Cologne West  - Cologne Longerich ), which runs parallel to the Cologne Hbf - Krefeld - Kleve line. There is a connection to the HGK track network via District 1 . The VzG line 2610 ( Köln Hbf  - Kleve ), the actual main line, is connected to the other lines via the Etzelstraße Abzw station section. The VzG route 2620 (Köln Hbf - Köln-Worringen ) serves the S-Bahn traffic . The station parts passenger station (Pbf) and turning system are located at it, at the station part Etzelstraße Abzw it joins the VzG line 2610. This line does not have its own tracks between Cologne-Nippes and Cologne-Longerich.

The control and safety systems of the station have been controlled since April 13, 1975 by the interlocking Nf, a relay interlocking of the SpDrS60 type with a number control panel. The signal box replaced several mechanical and electromechanical signal boxes from the early 20th century. The S-Bahn line up to and including Cologne-Chorweiler Nord and the Cologne Etzelstraße junction are remotely controlled from Nf.

history

ICE maintenance depot Cologne, 2018

The station went into operation with the opening of the Cöln Crefelder Bf - Neuss section on November 15, 1855. The operator of the line was initially the Cöln-Crefelder Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft , which was taken over by the Rheinische Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft (RhE) in 1860 . After the takeover by RhE, the company's Central workshop was created at Nippes . The Nippes marshalling yard went into operation around the same time. At the beginning of the 19th century, the marshalling yard was extensively expanded as part of the general expansion of Cologne's freight transport facilities. In 1914, the Cologne-Nippes depot went into operation.

Since 1975 the station has been integrated into the network of the S-Bahn Rhein-Sieg, today's S-Bahn Cologne. With the commissioning of the Cologne trunk line, the new Cologne-Nippes passenger station went into operation on May 26, 1990. This is located south of the marshalling yard on Hartwichstrasse. The historic station building, which is just a hundred meters south of the new stop on Escher Strasse, has been abandoned. The building has been a listed building since 2002 and is used for residential purposes.

The Köln-Nippes depot , which was dissolved in 1991 and was last referred to as Köln 1 depot , has served as the home of the Cologne Railway Museum since 1992 ; the most famous sub-tenant is the Rheinisches Industriebahn-Museum . In 2015, a DB Regio S-Bahn depot went into operation on the site of the former marshalling yard . The ICE maintenance depot in Cologne was inaugurated on February 23, 2018. The plant is the first CO 2 -neutral maintenance facility of Deutsche Bahn . The former station building and the nearby R 4 signal box were demolished for the construction. All of these facilities are located in the Bilderstöckchen district.

service

The passenger station is served by the lines S 6 ( Essen Hbf  - Köln-Nippes) of the S-Bahn Rhein-Ruhr and S 11 of the S-Bahn Cologne ( Bergisch Gladbach  - Düsseldorf Airport Terminal ) of the S-Bahn Cologne. During rush hour, the S 6 will be extended via Cologne-Chorweiler to Cologne-Worringen .
