The Chlodwigplatz underground station is an underground station in Cologne . It is located under the square that gives it its name and has been served by the Cologne Stadtbahn's north-south tram since December 2015 . A tram stop of the same name existed on the surface before that .
Structure and architecture
The stop planned by the architects Schaller / Theodor from Cologne has a large oval-shaped distribution level under the roundabout of the Chlodwigplatz and has six staircases (one of which is from a smaller distribution level in the north) and an elevator . The 90-meter-long platform is arranged as a central platform in the middle of the two directional tracks, also continues partially into the tunnel tubes and is 17.3 meters below the road.
On October 30, 2015, a colorful acrylic work of art made by Katharina Grosse was presented at a vernissage , which was produced using spray technology with a compressed air compressor.
Parts of a late medieval bulwark made of basalt , tuff and trachyte , which were found during the construction of the station, were also integrated into the station. The defense system originally belonged to Severinstorburg, north of Chlodwigplatz, and was built in 1474 when the townspeople had to defend themselves in the Cologne collegiate feud against Charles the Bold of Burgundy.
history
There has been a tram stop on the surface since the end of the 19th century, and in a north-south direction until the Second World War . Work has been going on since the end of 2002 on the north-south light rail system , which should relieve the inner city tunnel of the Cologne light rail system and at the same time better develop the old town. In the course of its construction, Chlodwigplatz was also fundamentally redesigned, the tram stop was relocated from the west to the east side of the square and tram line 6 to Marienburg was discontinued on August 30, 2002.
The commissioning of the north-south light rail with the Chlodwigplatz station, originally planned for 2011, could not be achieved due to the collapse of the Cologne City Archives caused by the light rail construction work. Full commissioning is expected in 2026/2027. The southern section of the route with the Chlodwigplatz station was opened as part of the timetable change on December 13, 2015.
