The Severinstraße underground station is a tram stop in Cologne's Severinsviertel, where line 17 of the north-south light rail is linked with lines 3 and 4 over the Severinsbrücke . The stop is named after the Severinstraße above it .

history

Construction and opening

The part of the station located on the surface was built together with the connecting Severinsbrücke to Deutz and opened in November 1959. The side platforms of this stop are in the middle of the street and are connected by a pedestrian bridge at no height.

Since 1980 the tram has been running on the bridge and the access ramps on a special track .

business

Since it opened in 1959, lines 4 (Bickendorf - Höhenhaus), 7 (Müngersdorf - Holweide), 9 (Weidenpesch - Vingst), 14 (Sülz - Schlebusch) and G (Neumarkt - Bergisch Gladbach) have crossed the bridge.

In June 1967 it was the lines 3 (Bickendorf - Thielenbruch), 4 (Bocklemünd - Höhenhaus), 14 (Sülz - Schlebusch), 17 (Müngersdorf - Holweide) and 18 (Rudolfplatz - Ostheim).

After the line network redesign in 1970, lines 3 (Bocklemünd - Thielenbruch), 4 (Bickendorf - Schlebusch), 9 (Longerich - Königsforst), 15 (Ossendorf - Höhenhaus) crossed Severinsbrücke and served the stop.

In 1978 there were still lines 3 (Bocklemünd - Thielenbruch), 4 (Friesenplatz - Schlebusch) and 9 (Chorweiler - Königsforst).

Line 9 ran over the bridge until 1994 and MesseLine 14 (Dom / Hbf - Koelnmesse) from 1984 to 2003. Since then, the trains from lines 3 (Mengenich - Thielenbruch) and 4 (Bocklemünd - Schlebusch) have been running here.

Reconstruction of the station part on the surface

The old low platforms of the stop on the surface were demolished during the construction of the north-south light rail in July 2010. First of all, temporary wooden elevated platforms were built, which means that lines 3 and 4 are the first high-floor lines to manage without folding steps.

On January 23, 2014, the renewed station section on the surface was put into operation. The station is now barrier-free thanks to two elevators and the elevated platforms .

New construction of the tunnel station

A tunnel stop was built for the north-south light rail, which went into operation on December 13, 2015. For the time being, it is the terminus of line 17 coming from Sürth or Rodenkirchen. This is operated every 10 minutes on weekdays and condenses line 16 between Schönhauser Straße and Rodenkirchen or Sürth to a 5-minute cycle.

After the north-south tram is fully operational, line 17 is to be discontinued and instead lines 5 (Butzweilerhof - Dom / Hbf - Heumarkt - Chlodwigplatz - Marktstraße) and 16 (Niehl - Breslauer Platz / Hbf - Heumarkt - Chlodwigplatz - Sürth - Wesseling - Bonn) to be laid in the tunnel.
