The Heumarkt underground station is a station of the Cologne Stadtbahn , which is served by line 5. Lines 1, 7 and 9 as well as several bus lines go to the above-ground part of the stop.

location

The underground station is located south of the Heumarkt and west of the Deutz bridge driveway .

history

After the opening of the Deutzer Brücke in 1915, the Heumarkt became a central traffic junction of the Cologne tram network, as most of the suburban railway lines started here. This central function ended with the destruction of the bridge in February 1945. The tram network, which was reorganized in the course of the reconstruction, left the Heumarkt only to function as a stop on the east-west route coming from the bridge. The Neumarkt became the transfer point to the suburban routes .

The first plans for a subway in Cologne were made around 1912; this should have traveled through Cologne city center in a north-south line, which would have been similar in its route to the current north-south light rail . However, because of the First World War , this subway was not built.

When the first Cologne tunnel route was built in the 1960s, a possible branch from the cathedral / main train station to the south to connect to the Rheinuferbahn was planned. However, other new lines initially had a higher priority. The construction of the Deutz tunnel at the end of the Deutz Bridge on the right bank of the Rhine was continued in 1980 with the expansion of the bridge to meet the requirements of the city rail network and an above-ground tram stop on the bridge ramp on the left bank of the Rhine. In the course of these construction measures, a tunnel ramp was built west of the station in the direction of Neumarkt as a preliminary construction work for the later construction of a subway in east-west direction . However, since no tunnel extension was initially planned, the ramp on Augustinerstraße was filled in for the time being. The plans at that time for the future north-south light rail provided a route about 100 m further east, i.e. H. the stop in the east-west direction was not intended as a temporary measure, but was to be crossed underground.

In 1992 the current route of the underground north-south light rail was decided, after the end of the planning approval procedure in 2002, construction of the underground began in 2004, accompanied by extensive archaeological excavations. In November 2004, damage to a Romanesque round arch and the vaulted ceiling in the church of St. Maria im Kapitol not far from the Heumarkt was discovered; the connection with the construction of the subway was clear. Between the Heumarkt station and the future next station, Severinstrasse , the historical archive of the City of Cologne collapsed on March 3, 2009 as a result of construction work on the tunnel , and two people died under the rubble.

Concreting the false ceiling in early 2010

In January and February 2010, additional bulkheads were built into the Heumarkt station in order to be able to flood them because of the expected Rhine flood for the purpose of groundwater pressure equalization. Because an intermediate ceiling could be concreted at short notice, which additionally stiffened the construction pit, it did not have to be flooded. The station was officially opened on December 14, 2013 and put into operation one day later when the timetable changed, due to the gaping gap between Heumarkt and Severinstraße at the collapsed Historical City Archives with limited traffic:

Line 5
  • Line 5 comes in from the north from Dom / Hbf and Rathaus , ends there and goes back again. Since the only track change of the north-south light rail will be between Heumarkt and Severinstraße, only the later track to the south at the town hall and at Heumarkt will be used in both directions; north of the town hall station, northbound trains change to the “correct one” via a temporary switch “Track.
  • The line 16 is not driving the Haymarket until the planned 2025 completion of the north-south light rail.
  • The underground routing of lines 1, 7 and 9 in an east-west direction is planned, but not expected in the foreseeable future. With the large hall on the second underground level, a noteworthy preliminary construction work has been carried out, so that an underground tower station would later emerge.

The construction of the station cost 90 million euros. 60 percent of this was borne by the Federal Republic of Germany, 30 percent by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and 10 percent by the city of Cologne.

Design of the station

The largest underground station in Cologne is kept very open. It was designed by the architectural office of Prof. Ulrich Coersmeier GmbH. Two distribution levels, which are connected by long escalators, characterize the appearance. The tram trains run on the lowest level. There is an art installation on platform 2: Ghosttrain is the name of this project. A special train is announced every day between 8 p.m. and midnight. You can hear the train passing, but you can't see it. With this installation the artist wants to draw attention to the constant restlessness of our time.
