The Kartäuserhof underground station is a tunnel station of the north-south light rail in the Severinsviertel in Cologne .

Architecture and equipment

The underground station built by the architectural office Stephan Schmitz BDA Architekten + Städteplaner is located between the stations Severinstraße (475 m away) and Chlodwigplatz (400 m away) of the newly built north-south light rail.

With a width of 12 meters at its narrowest point, it is the narrowest station on the north-south light rail. The platforms were therefore built right into the tunnels that lie under an existing building. The platform edges can be reached via three cross passages.

The underground station has three exits, six driving and four fixed staircases , which are connected via a distribution level. A glass elevator placed in the middle of the station provides barrier-free access and directs daylight onto the platform and also implements the basic architectural concept of the new construction sections of the north-south light rail in terms of color and design.

Building history

In March 2005, preparatory work such as laying cables in the area of the future Kartäuserhof stop in Severinstrasse began. From September 2005, the 45 m deep diaphragm walls made of in-situ concrete were drawn in, which were supposed to demarcate the construction pit from the pressing groundwater during construction . After the guiding walls had been erected, which guided the gripper of the diaphragm wall excavator, the earth was dug and the resulting "slot" was reinforced with steel and concreted.

In the spring of 2006, work began on stabilizing the loose rock soil with cement suspensions by means of high pressure injections and bored piles in order to protect the existing buildings and to prepare the use of the tunnel boring machine . After completion of the diaphragm walls, the construction pit was deepened from July 2006 and initially archaeologically documented. The tunnel tubes were driven from 2006 (east route) to 2007 (west route) using shield driving with the help of a Herrenknecht tunnel boring machine . In April 2007, the excavation pit was covered with a reinforced concrete cover to ensure that traffic in Severinstrasse was restored. Between December 2007 and October 2008, the groundwater-filled soil in the area of the bus stop was frozen in order to create the crosscuts and complete the shell . In August 2009 the station was finished to the point that the drainage system , which had been in place since April 2009, could be turned off.

Archaeological research

During the construction phase, the excavation pit was archaeologically examined and documented. The Kartäuserhof stop is in the area on the antique road to Bonn . During the Roman times in the 1st to 4th centuries AD, the area served as a burial place on both sides of the road . Numerous finds document this epoch. The site retained this function until the early Middle Ages (8th century AD). In the immediate vicinity there was a late Roman chapel ( cella memoriae ) and a Merovingian burial church, which is regarded as the predecessor of today's parish church of St. Severin .

Since the High Middle Ages, a closed roadside development has been built on both sides of the street , the foundations and cellars of which have been excavated. From the Severinsstift up to the secularization of 1802, wine was grown in the gardens of the houses .

Planned commissioning

According to the original plans, the station should already be put into operation in the course of the planned opening of the 1st and 2nd construction stages of the north-south light rail at the timetable change in December 2011. Due to the collapse of the city archives of the city of Cologne in March 2009 on Waidmarkt due to an accident during construction work on the underground line, this and the planned opening of the 1st and 2nd construction stages of the north-south light rail were postponed. During the investigation of the collapse accident it was found that other train stations, including the Kartäuserhof station, were affected by the manipulation of the construction protocols. The new line was opened when the timetable changed on December 13, 2015. Originally, it was planned to initially operate provisionally during rush hour between Serverinsstrasse and Sürth using Stadtbahn line 17 to relieve line 16. However, it was announced in the summer that operations could be guaranteed all day from the start.
