The underground station Bonner Wall is a station of the north-south light rail in the network of the Cologne light rail network . It is the last tunnel stop on the newly built route out of town.

Structure and architecture

The station planned by the architects' office BHBFH (initially: Busmann + Haberer ) is the only one of the new construction stations that is largely not located in the tunnel tubes driven by tunnel boring machines , but was built using an open construction method because of the nearby branch and tunnel exit. Only the northern ends of the two side platforms are in the tubes. The station has a distribution level with two exits at each end of the platform. Two lifts ensure barrier-free access to the platforms.

Connection

The commissioning of the north-south tram, originally planned for 2011, including the Bonner Wall station, could not be achieved in March 2009 due to the collapse of the Cologne city archives caused by the tram construction work. Full commissioning is currently expected between 2020 and 2023. The southern section of the route to the Severinstrasse station  is therefore to be opened in partial operation. To this end, line 17 has been shuttling from Severinstrasse since December 13, 2015, using the Kartäuserhof , Chlodwigplatz and Bonner Wall stations and then on via the Rheinuferbahn to Sürth or Rodenkirchen and consolidates line 16 on the existing section The following lines operate on Heumarkt and Severinstraße :

Planned commissioning

According to the original plans, the station should already be put into operation in the course of the planned opening of the 1st and 2nd construction stages of the north-south light rail at the timetable change in December 2011. Due to the collapse of the city archives of the city of Cologne in March 2009 on Waidmarkt due to an accident during construction work on the underground line, this and the planned opening of the 1st and 2nd construction stages of the north-south light rail were postponed. When investigating the collapse accident it was found that other train stations were also affected by the manipulation of the construction logs. The new line was opened for the timetable change on December 13, 2015. Originally, the operation was initially planned to run provisionally during rush hour between Serverinsstraße and Sürth by tram line 17 in order to relieve line 16. However, it was announced in summer 2015 that operation could be guaranteed all day from the start.

Trivia

Due to the lack of a track change in the area of the provisionally commissioned section, the curiosity arises that trains run on both platforms both in the direction of Rodenkirchen and in the direction of Severinstraße. Passengers at the Bonner Wall station must therefore find out on the intermediate level which platform the next train will be on in the desired direction, as the station - unlike the other stations - is equipped with side platforms.
