Sürth is a district in the south of the city of Cologne and belongs administratively to the Rodenkirchen district .

location

Sürth is located on the western bank of the Rhine . In the west the place borders on the Cologne districts of Godorf and Hahnwald , in the north on Rodenkirchen and Weiß . The districts of Zündorf and Langel are on the opposite eastern bank of the Rhine .

history

The parish church of Sankt Remigius with the striking bell tower is the landmark of Sürth.

The first historical mention of Sürth, at that time still as Soretha , comes from the year 1059. In 1067 some properties in Sorethe were donated to the St. George monastery. Until the 19th century, the place lived from agriculture , fishing and viticulture . At the end of the 19th century, with the establishment of the Sürther machine factory (first Hammerschmidt & Wescher , later Linde ), industrialization began, which was followed by modern residential construction at the beginning of the 20th century, primarily as villa colonies or single-family houses. The town center, on the other hand, was able to retain its rather rural structure. Politically, Sürth had belonged to the Brühl office in the then Electorate of Cologne since the Middle Ages and came under French administration with this in 1794. With the establishment of modern administrative structures, Sürth became part of Mairie Rondorf in the canton of Brühl in the Arrondissement de Cologne of the Département de la Roer . In 1815 Sürth came to the Kingdom of Prussia and in 1816 when the mayor's office in Rondorf was established in the district of Cologne . After the Rondorf office was renamed in 1964, the place again became part of the Rodenkirchen community, with which Sürth was incorporated into the city of Cologne in 1975.

Culture and sights

Attractions

In the west of the district in the streets Ulmenallee, Rotdornallee and Ober Buschweg is the "Landhaus-Kolonie Sürth", which was built from the summer of 1910 to 1912 according to plans by the architect and government master builder Max Stirn , which has largely been preserved in its original form and is partly a listed building. It is one of very few closed villa developments in the Cologne area that were built according to uniform planning.

leisure

There are two large sports clubs in Sürth. The VfL Sürth 1925 eV has specialized in soccer and trained around 23 youth teams. Since the merger with TV 06 Rodenkirchen eV in 2010, the club has been active under the name FC Rheinsüd Köln 2010 eV . The TV Sürth 05 eV offers, with the exception of football, several popular sports. The Löstige Flägelskappe Sürth 1968 red-white e. V. and since 2000 the Golden Horde Sürth e. V. represent the place again in the carnival . The Modellbahnfreunde Sürth e. V. as a community of interests for the model railway hobby, which also operate their own modular system with a total length of around 35 meters.

Since 1957 the Dorfgemeinschaft Sürth e. V. as an amalgamation of the Sürther associations for the coordination of local festivities, such as the May Festival, the fair and the senior citizens' festival. The village community has a significant impact on local life in Sürth and tries to integrate new residents. It also publishes Soretha , a quarterly magazine about what's going on in town.

Cologne wax factory

The wax factory in Cologne is an artists' association. It was formed at the instigation and mediation of the City of Cologne on October 6, 1979 in a former candle and wax factory on Industriestrasse. The building consists of several different components and a high chimney, the landmark of the whole complex. At first, the wax factory was relatively remote in an agriculturally used landscape. Today it is partially surrounded by new industrial facilities. The building serves the artists as a living, working and exhibition space and also includes a café. The visual artist, graphic artist and cartoonist Josta Stapper also lives and works here . In the meantime, parts of the system have also been rented out for television series, such as the Roche & Böhmermann program broadcast by ZDF .
