The Marktstraße tram stop is a station of the north-south tram in the Cologne tram network . The station on the surface in the area south of the city center will be opened as the end point of the first construction phase. After completion of the third construction stage, this stop will remain as an en route stop or end point of repeater trips. The commissioning of the north-south light rail with this station, originally planned for 2011, could not be achieved due to the collapse of the Cologne city archives in March 2009 caused by the light rail construction work. Full commissioning is currently expected between 2020 and 2023.

Structure and architecture

The platforms seen from the north

In the final stage, the Marktstrasse station will consist of three tracks, one of which ends butt. The stump track and the directional track to the north share a central platform , while the directional track to the south has its own side platform . The platforms were built as early as the late 2000s in the high-floor design customary for the north-south lines . The station planned by the architects Scharf + Kirsten is the first stop on the surface out of town and is already behind the junction of line 16 to Bonn , so that it will not stop at the station. Like all of the north-south light rail vehicles , the station is barrier-free .

Building history

In order to ensure the connection of the Marktstraße stop located on the surface to the tunnel stop Bonner Wall further north, a 160 meter long ramp was built in September 2005. For this purpose, diaphragm walls were first set for a trough structure . After the diaphragm walls had been completed, the earth was excavated for the construction of the ramp. In March 2006, the supply facilities for the tunnel boring machines were set up in the ramp area . In January 2007, the walls began to be reinforced in sections with steel , boarded and then concreted. In 2008, work on the ramp walls was completed by cladding with noise protection elements . The assembly of the platforms from precast concrete parts and the paving work in the area of the stops were completed in mid-2008.

Connection

Buses 132 and 133 of the Kölner Verkehrsbetriebe , the predecessor lines of the north-south light rail system, which will continue to run to Chlodwigplatz after the station opens, currently stop at the bus stop .

From December 13, 2015, line 17 will serve all the other already completed stops of the north-south light rail system as far as Severinstrasse , but since this line is to lead to Rodenkirchen , Marktstrasse will not be served by this line. According to an unconfirmed newspaper report from April 2015, it is planned that the third construction phase in 2018 could be opened before the Heumarkt – Severinstrasse section , but how the lines will then run is unclear.

If the third construction phase is only opened after the Heumarkt – Severinstraße section, line 5 from the north-west of Cologne will end at Marktstraße:

After the opening of the third construction phase, line 5 is to be extended:

  • 5 Am Butzweilerhof - Friesenplatz - Cathedral / Central Station  - Heumarkt - Severinstrasse - Chlodwigplatz (below)  - Bonner Wall - Marktstrasse  - Bonner Str./Gürtel - Arnoldshöhe

Additional trips are also planned from the north branch of line 16 to Marktstrasse, Arnoldshöhe or Rodenkirchen, but the exact routes or line numbers have not yet been announced.

The KVB is planning a continuation of line 5, which runs on the north-south light rail system, to Meschenich, but no information on the timing of the implementation is available to date.
