A trough structure in traffic route construction consists of lateral supporting walls and a closed base. The sole is usually designed as a ramp on which the traffic route is guided. It serves, for example, as an entrance to a tunnel or an underpass .

Such a trough structure, if it is located in the groundwater , must be watertight, for example with waterproof concrete. In such a case, the trough structure must be secured against buoyancy (floating). This can be done by the weight of the structure and / or by anchoring in the ground. Driven piles made of reinforced concrete or steel or bored piles made of reinforced concrete are used for anchoring in the ground .

Because of the import ban on live cattle, sea border slaughterhouses were established. So that imported cattle could get to the slaughterhouses in a shielded way, they were driven over the Hochtrifte .
