It was opened in 1968 as the first underground station in Cologne, redesigned in 2005 and has two tracks. Entry and exit are handled via side platforms . The underground station is one of the busiest stations on the Cologne light rail. The underground station has two intermediate levels: one leads to Cologne main station and to the station forecourt / Trankgasse , also by elevator. There are KVB information and sales counters and public telephones and another elevator to the main station. The other mezzanine level leads to Cologne Cathedral and the St. Andreas Basilica . There is a kiosk and a public telephone, but no elevator.

location

Track plan

The station is located below Trankgasse between Cologne Cathedral and Cologne Central Station . Accordingly, the subway station also has two exits: The main exit leads to the main hall of the main station, the " Hohe Straße " staircase leads directly to the west facade of Cologne Cathedral. In the west there is also an exit in front of Marzellenstrasse and another exit at the Andreaskloster in front of the Basilica Sankt Andreas .

The underground station is part of the inner city tunnel and, together with the Breslauer Platz / Hbf underground station, is one of two light rail stations next to Cologne Central Station. Both stations are on the same stretch of tunnel that passes under the main train station in a 120 ° curve. The operator is the Kölner Verkehrs-Betriebe (KVB), and around 900 scheduled light rail trains run there every day .

history

The underground station in August 1991

The underground station was opened in 1968 during the construction of the inner city tunnel as one of the first underground stations in Cologne. At that time the tunnel route was designed as an underground tram . As an advance payment for a later north-south light rail, a tunnel connection was built east of the stop, which was connected to the line via a triangular track. In everyday operation, the trade fair line 14 turned here for a long time , which could only travel with single wagons due to the limited length of the turning system. With the relocation of line 12 from the inner city tunnel to the rings in December 2003, the last low-floor line disappeared from the Dom / Hbf station . Since then, traffic has been handled exclusively with high-floor trams of the types B and K5000 .

modification

After the most frequented Neumarkt subway station was converted to elevated platforms in 2004, Dom / Hbf followed in 2005. With a view to World Youth Day in August 2005, the conversion originally planned for the summer holidays was brought forward a few weeks. During the week around Corpus Christi at the end of May, the station was therefore completely closed in order to be able to complete the renovation before the start of the major event. In the course of the renovation, an elevator was installed from the Domplatte to the mezzanine level. Elevators from the intermediate to the platform level were retrofitted in 2007/2008, which means that the subway station is now barrier-free .

The tunnel stump at the east end of the station, which serves as an advance payment for the connection to the north-south light rail system, was expanded in the course of the project. Since the timetable change in December 2012, this connection has been used by line 5, which has since led to the newly opened Rathaus stop instead of Reichenspergerplatz . The connection in Ostend to the Dom / Hauptbahnhof stop is at the same level.

In 2013 , trips on line 5 from Dom / Hbf to the town hall in Cologne Cathedral were heard, felt and seismographically measured. Until the installation of damping elements, the maximum speed for the curve between the cathedral and town hall was limited to 20 km / h for a few months.
