The Reichenspergerplatz underground station is a station on lines 16 and 18 of the Cologne Stadtbahn in the Neustadt-Nord district . The underground station, known internally as RPP by the Cologne transport company, is located under Riehler Strasse on the edge of the eponymous square and is 400, 700 and 1000 meters away from the neighboring stations Ebertplatz, Zoo / Flora and Children's Hospital.
The underground station went into operation on August 25, 1974 during the major commissioning of new lines in Cologne: On the same day, the underground junction at Ebertplatz , the tunnel line under Neusser Strasse with three stations and the elevated railway line along the belt went into operation . Structurally, the station resembles those under Neusser Straße: the tunnel cross-section is doubled in the area of the stops and a number of supporting pillars are inserted between the tracks. The walls are tiled in one color, in the case of Reichenspergerplatz in green. At the southern end of the platform there is a staircase to the mezzanine level, there is no further staircase or elevators.
To the north-east there is a tunnel that follows Riehler Straße and comes to the surface behind the Zoobrücke . From this tunnel section another tunnel section branches off in a northerly direction at the same height, which was built at the same time as the rest of the facility, but only went into operation in 1991 with the section along Amsterdamer Straße . As a special feature, there is an underground turning loop between the two tunnel sections , which is driven in clockwise direction. It was used regularly by line 5, which ended at Reichenspergerplatz until the timetable change in December 2012.
Since the conversion of line 5 to light rail vehicles in 2002, Reichenspergerplatz has been served exclusively by high-floor vehicles. The construction of elevated platforms would therefore be possible and relatively simple, but is not considered sensible as long as barrier-free access is not created by retrofitting elevators . Since the station is frequented on average with around 6800 passengers per day, an expansion is planned, but can be found in the lower part of the priority lists.
