The Neustadt-Nord district is located in the center of Cologne, northwest of the old town. Politically he belongs to the city center district .

geography

The division between the districts of Neustadt-Nord and Neustadt-Süd is purely pragmatic. The inner border is formed by Aachener Strasse . They are bounded by the Cologne rings to the two other districts of the city center on the left bank of the Rhine, old town north and south . Due to the building work of the 20th century, which includes in particular the reconstruction after the destruction of the Second World War , all four parts of the city have largely become the same in terms of development. The Neustadt is separated from the outer districts of Ehrenfeld , Neuehrenfeld , Nippes and Riehl by the Innere Kanalstraße , a four- to six-lane ring road. The Veedel Agnesviertel , Mediapark , Grüngürtel, Belgisches Viertel and Stadtgartenviertel belong to Neustadt-Nord .

Cologne Tower in the Mediapark

In the district is the MediaPark - an ensemble built on the site of the former Gereon freight yard, in which around 250 companies have established themselves and around 5,000 jobs have settled there. In addition, the site houses a multiplex cinema , a hotel and two elongated residential buildings. The complex includes the Kölnturm , with 43 floors and 148 m height the tallest skyscraper in the city. The building was designed by the architect Jean Nouvel .
The tallest building in the city, the 266 m high Colonius television tower , is also located in the Neustadt Nord, as is the Hansa high-rise, which was the tallest high-rise in Europe when it was built in 1925.

In the north of the district is at Ebertplatz the beginning of Neusser Straße , which was formerly part of the northern arterial road of the Roman city. Cologne's second largest church, St. Agnes, was built on this . Close by is the Higher Regional Court building on Reichenspergerplatz , a neo-baroque building erected between 1907 and 1911. Opposite it is the neo-renaissance building of the regional tax office, which was built between 1908 and 1911, with the modern administrative building connected to it. There are two larger parks in the city district: the city garden, which was laid out in 1828, and Fort X , a part of the former inner fortress ring, which was redesigned as a garden . Part of this garden is called Hilde-Domin-Park . The connection to the Rhine is established in 1997 by the collectors Michael and Eleonore Stoffel , a sculpture park of approx. 25,000 m² in Cologne .

The bastion at the eastern end of Theodor-Heuss-Ring , partly designed by Wilhelm Riphahn in the Expressionist architectural style in 1924 , was built on a destroyed Prussian fortification tower and stands out due to its protruding steel construction, which protrudes over the bank of the Rhine below. For a long time an exclusive restaurant with a wonderful view was housed in the 300 m² room. Today the area is rented out for special occasions.

Two modern church buildings from the post-war period are Neu St. Alban im Stadtgarten, built from rubble bricks in 1958 according to plans by Hans Schilling , and the parish church of St. Gertrud on Krefelder Strasse, designed by Gottfried Böhm in 1965 .

The Cologne Wine Museum has existed since 2010 .

The event hall EXPO XXI on Gladbacher Wall served the Schauspiel Köln from June 2012 to 2013 as interim quarters during the renovation work on the main building
