Hans Schilling (born April 4, 1921 in Cologne ; † February 19, 2009 there ) was a German architect .

Life

Hans Schilling was born on April 4, 1921 with his twin sister Gretel. His school career began at the elementary school in Cologne-Nippes . He then attended the Hansa-Gymnasium in Cologne and the middle boys' school in Cologne-Nippes. The young school leaver completed an apprenticeship as a draftsman in the office of the Cologne architect Karl Band . After two years of training, he was able to finish his apprenticeship early and then worked for his instructor for another year and a half.

After the Second World War , Hans Schilling and his nephew founded an architecture office in Paderborn . But he soon moved back to Cologne and designed many projects in his hometown.

At the age of 34 he established himself as a freelance architect. In 1980, Hans Schilling teamed up with Peter Kulka . Despite professional success, they soon separated again and went their own way.

In addition to some important church buildings, the following Cologne buildings are also among his works: the Chamber of Crafts , the Kolping House, the reconstruction of the Gürzenich (1952–1955) together with Karl Band, J. Bernard and Rudolf Schwarz and the Maternushaus (1978–1983) with Peter Kulka , as well as numerous commercial and residential buildings and the butcher's house on Hohenzollernring.

Hans Schilling was a member of the Association of German Architects , the Architektur Forum Rheinland eV and an honorary member of the Deutscher Werkbund NW eV and the sponsoring association of the House of Architecture in Cologne . The Cologne architect and professor of architecture at MSA Münster, Johannes Schilling is his son.

His grave is in the Melaten cemetery in Cologne (hall 35).

His most important church buildings include the Abbey Church of Königsmünster in Meschede , the Church of Peace "To the Holy Angels" in Wesel and Neu St. Alban in Cologne.

Characteristic of Schilling's church buildings is often the pentagonal floor plan, with a long parabolic choir building until the Second Vatican Council , later without. With the parabolic shape, the "holy litter" of the famous church builder Rudolf Schwarz has been taken up. Many of Hans Schilling's churches show influences from Le Corbusier and his famous pilgrimage chapel Notre Dame du Haut in Ronchamp , for example the small branch church “Zur Heiligen Familie” in Reichshof-Feld with its curved outer walls. Typical of the buildings by Hans Schilling are the sculptural extensions and installations (often baptismal chapels, staircases, sacred chapels).

Quote

"I only drew, read, everything I could get about architecture."

- This is how Hans Schilling remembered the year 1937 when he began his apprenticeship in the office of Clemens Endler and Karl Band
