history

The names "Clauhausen" and "Claushausen", which are probably based on the family names of the first residents, are first mentioned in a document in 1471.

Two spatially separated courts are known as "Oberste Clauhausen" and "Niederste Clauhausen". Later on, different courtyards resulted from subdivisions. The owner families were initially called: Blombach, Fischer, Grund, Hilbert, Kohlbruch and Wette.

The brothers "Hans and Hänschen Manns" and "Gerhard and Hans Manns" later ran two farms in Niederklausen. It is said that three times a year the "Niederste Klausen" had to pay taxes. In 1653 Bernd von Bechem came from the Münsterland and settled in Klausen. A family restaurant existed on today's Klausener Straße until the 21st century. In 1683 the goods were divided into a total of nine "individual farms". The families Döppert, Geit and Steffens were added. In 1834 there were three shops in Klausen that were also restaurants. In 1851 the Klausener founded a poor and orphanage.

Three of the old buildings still exist in the current Klausen street, are under monument protection and are exemplary maintained: House No. 11 (born in 1777), 18 (first half of the 18th century) and 24 (second half of the 18th century).

Infrastructure

Former Protestant church in Klausen
Lockfinker Straße - the "new Klausen"

For almost 40 years since the 1960s, Klausen had a functioning infrastructure with a range of shopping opportunities such as a grocery store, hairdresser, drug store , dye store , savings bank, shoemaker and other craftsmen as well as restaurants and a senior citizens' club .

In 1970 the architect Hans Schilling built the Catholic Church of the Holy Spirit in a modern style , which belonged to the parish of Lüttringhausen . The church was torn down again in 2000, because the parish could no longer maintain the church due to the decline in church attendants. The St. Martin Catholic day care center is located on Lockfinker Straße.

In 2010 the community center in Klausen on Hans-Böckler-Straße was closed.

The Klausen school center is located on Lockfinker Straße . The Leibniz Gymnasium is domiciled here. The Eisernstein elementary school has been at home in the same building complex since the fire in the old school building in August 2012 . The secondary school in Klausen used to exist here, but it was closed due to a lack of demand.

The former Protestant church, like the parish hall, was demolished in 2014 and 2015; there is now the residential area "Klausener Kirchweg". The daycare center run by the Protestant parish of Lüttringhausen has remained at the old location.

The district is served by the city bus lines 620 and 654. The Remscheid citizens bus also goes to Klausen.

The Lüttringhauser Schützenbruderschaft “Zum Kreuz” - today only active as a shooting club - has its shooting range in the Klausen Bachtal on the edge of the green belt. There is also a star golf course used by golfers in Wermelskirchen on the neighboring site . However, it is open all day for those interested. Volunteers from Klausen supervise and look after the facility. The nearby fish pond is gradually silting up.

Formerly there was a rifle club in Klausen in the 19th century , the carnival club "Die Stockfischgarde", the men's choir "Orpheus" and later the MGV Klausen, which ultimately joined the Lüttringhauser men's choir due to a lack of members. The Klausen Citizens' Association, founded around 1970, has been in the process of being dissolved since 2011.

Every year the “Schlawiner” organize the “District Festival on Klausen's Green Meadow”, in which many clubs and organizations take part and which is always well received by the population, as well as the soap box race in the Großhülsberg industrial area .

A two-storey mosque owned by a Turkish sponsoring association is located in the Klausen street, i.e. in the core of the former court . It is located in an inconspicuous building.
