Engelsburg is a statistical district of the Lennep district of the Bergisch city of Remscheid , North Rhine-Westphalia .

Location and description

The predominantly rural district is located in the southeast of Remscheid and is the largest statistical district of Remscheid in terms of area. It covers the urban area east of the route of the disused railway line Wuppertal-Oberbarmen-Opladen ("Balkanexpress") to the Wuppertalsperre . In the west, Engelsburg borders on the statistical district of Bergisch Born West , in the north on the statistical districts of Hackenberg , Hasenberg and Trecknase and in the south on the district of Bergisch Born Ost . In the west it borders on the city of Hückeswagen and beyond the Wuppertalsperre on the city of Radevormwald .

The district has not grown historically, but combines parts of the former communities of Fünfzehnhöfe and Neuhückeswagen (later to Hückeswagen) into one unit. It is named after the old court of Castel Sant'Angelo in the west, which is just one of numerous court and residential areas in the district.

The entire district lies in the catchment area of the Wuppertalsperre and is largely forested or used for agriculture. Both the Lenneper Bach with its tributary Panzerbach , the Feldbach and numerous tributaries of the Dörpe drain towards the Wuppertalsperre. The western border is formed by the watershed to the catchment area of the Eschbach .

In addition to Castel Sant'Angelo, which gives it its name, the district includes the courts and residential areas of Lüdorf , Heydt , Bergerhöhe , Eichenhof , Leverkusen , Eichendahlerhof , Rademachershof , Forsten , Repslöh , Grünebirke , Dörpholz , Oberfeldbach , Niederfeldbach , D Körperhöhe , Dörpmühle , Hangberger Mühle , Müllersberg , Jacobsmühle , Nagelsberg and Kräwinklerbrücke .

The places that were mostly lost due to the construction of the Wuppertal dam between 1970 and 1985 include Käsberg , the Remscheid part of Dörpe , Oege , Felbeckerhammer , Spaniermühle , Nagelsbergermühle , Nagelsberger Gemarke , Wassermühle , Wilhelmsmühle and large parts of Kräwinklerbrücke.

history

In the 19th century, the northern area of the district belonged to the municipality of Fünfzehnhöfe within the mayor's office of Wermelskirchen , which in turn goes back to an old Bergisch administrative unit in the medieval office of Bornefeld . The southern part belonged to the Lüdorfer Honschaft , which also belonged to the Bornefeld office in the Middle Ages and the early modern period and in the 19th century to the municipality of Neuhückeswagen and from 1920 to Hückeswagen.

In 1906 the mayor's office was incorporated into the town of Lennep, which in turn was incorporated into Remscheid in 1929. Due to the Düsseldorf Act (§ 21), large parts of Hückeswagen in the area of the district were spun off and also incorporated into Remscheid, effective January 1, 1975.
