Garschagen is a statistical district of the district and borough of Lüttringhausen in the Bergisch city of Remscheid in North Rhine-Westphalia .

geography

Garschagen is located in northeastern Remscheid on the city limits of Wuppertal . The Marscheider Bach rises near the Garschager Heide with the water tower and flows into the Wupper after its way through the Luckhauser Tal and the Marscheider Wald. The Garschagener Bach has its headwaters south of Obergarschagen directly below the motorway. It crosses Ober- and Untergarschagen and flows into the Herbringhauser dam after the only a few hundred meters long "Mitteliefen" on the footpath from Schreverheide flows into it.

history

The family name, the name of the local area, as well as the name of the former Honschaft Garschagen in the parish of Lüttringhausen belong to the extensive history. The old parish of Lüttringhausen formerly comprised five administrative units, one of which was Garschagen. It was first mentioned as Honschaft in the middle of the 16th century. The origin and center point was the farm group of the same name in Garschagen, still known today as the Upper, Middle and Lower Garschagen.

In 1284, Count Adolf von Berg had established families from Flanders and Brabant, that is, cloth makers, here. The ancestor of the Garschagen family could be found among their descendants. The name was mentioned for the first time on an old Solingen document from December 7, 1383. There is talk of a Winand von Garsshagen.

Christoffel Garschagen was born around 1603, the oldest progenitor to date, of whom there is a death certificate. On October 20, 1828, Carl Garschagen was named as the headmaster in Garschagen, and in the address book of the same year Johann Karl Garschagen is listed as "shoemaker and economist". Friedrich Wilhelm Garschagen, who died in 1925, worked in the same division. According to his descendants, he made boot shafts. Peter Wilhelm Kleuser, on the other hand, ran the “Sayettfabrik” according to the address book mentioned, ie was active in the textile sector.

The part of the name “Gar” is said to be derived from “Ger” (spear of the Teutons), while “Hagen” is derived from “Hag”, which could mean “root” or “thorn bushes”. But a relationship with “forest, bushes” is also conceivable. “Hage” can also be interpreted as “point” or “hoe”. According to Caspar Garschagen, magistrate in Elberfeld , the family coat of arms should have been used for the first time in 1670 . Presumably he was a son of Jaspar Garschagen, who also acted as a lay judge.

At that time, this position often remained in the family for a long time. Since a Hagen family kept the “Tyr Rune” coat of arms books as early as 1562, a hint to clarify the origin of names and coats of arms is also conceivable here. The point in the coat of arms, however, could be a spearhead, ploughshare or rune. There is also a question mark with the three feathers. Whether it is peacock or ostrich feathers remains unclear at first.

Obergarschagen

The district of Obergarschagen was almost completely destroyed in a fire in 1841. The former school building, which used to be equipped with a bell tower, has fallen into disrepair. The teacher Daniel Schürmann , author of the arithmetic book, worked in this house for several years. Opposite is an internationally known fuchsia grower at home. In Obergarschagen there is a second generation chicken farm . There are also some farms here. There is a court cross at the entrance to the court .

Undergarments

The painter Ewald Platte was born here in 1894 .
