history
The Eschbach in the south of Remscheid is only 12 km long from its sources to the confluence with the Wupper. With its abundance of water, a high volume of drinking water and a difference in altitude of 240 m, it was one of the most frequented creeks in Remscheid in the 16th and 17th centuries for hydropower plants. From the Mebusmühle to the confluence of the Lobach there were still 13 hammer mills and grinding docks on a 6 km stretch until the beginning of the 20th century. Only a few of these “industrial locations” continue to operate today. Numerous semi or total devastation have survived, which still tell a story of Remscheid's iron industry today. The relics preserved in the landscape also point to the respective technical developments of the hammer mill or Schleifkottens.Since 2019, a deepening of the Eschbach has been carried out, which should be completed by spring 2020.
