Harald Sunde (born March 9, 1954 in Hurdal ) is a former Norwegian general . He was last Commander in Chief of the Norwegian Armed Forces from October 2009 to November 2013 .

Life

Harald Sunde joined the Norwegian armed forces in 1974 and initially completed his training as an officer candidate in the cavalry force and was then employed as leader of a reconnaissance department and as an instructor until 1976. Until 1979 he studied at the Norwegian Military Academy .

In 1986 Sunde completed the staff officer course and was promoted to major in the same year . From 1987 to 1989 he took part in the international general staff course at the command academy of the Bundeswehr in Hamburg and then returned as a teacher at the Army Staff College . In 1992 he was promoted to lieutenant colonel.

Sunde took part in the IFOR mission in Bosnia-Herzegovina from 1996 as Chief of Staff of the Nordic-Polish Brigade . On his return he took command of a brigade in southern Norway and was promoted to colonel . From 1998 to 1999, Sunde was again transferred abroad and completed a year of study at the United States Army War College in Carlisle , Pennsylvania .

Back in Norway, Sunde first served in the Planning Department of the Armed Forces Staff before being appointed Brigadier General and Inspector of the Cavalry in 2000, a position he held until 2002. After a brief assignment in the Joint Forces Command Brunssum in Belgium , Sunde took over various commands in the leadership of the Norwegian armed forces until 2009, where he was responsible for the Norwegian armed forces’s Afghanistan mission (ISAF) in the Ministry of Defense ; During this time he was promoted first to major general (2003) and then to lieutenant general (2006).

On October 1, 2009, Harald Sunde was promoted to general and took over command of the Norwegian armed forces, which he held until his retirement in November 2013. Haakon Bruun-Hanssen was appointed his successor .

Harald Sunde is married and has two children.
