Sverre B. Hamre

Sverre Ludvig Borgund Hamre (* 19th October 1918 in Bergen , † 15. May 1990 ) was a Norwegian General of the Army (Den Norske Hær) , the last 1977-1982 commander of the Norwegian Armed Forces (Forsvarssjef) was.

Life

Hamre attended the 4th Division Command School after high school in 1938 and then became a soldier in the 9th Infantry Regiment. After the attack by the German Wehrmacht on Norway on April 9, 1940 , he fled to Great Britain on October 30, 1941 and became an ensign and as a member of the exile troops in 1941 Promoted to lieutenant in 1942 . After attending war school in London , he took part in Operation Overlord in June 1944 , the Allied landing in Normandy , and subsequently on the Allied side in combat operations in Western Europe .

After the end of the Second World War , Hamre remained an army officer (Den Norske Hær) and was promoted to captain in 1947 and graduated from the Swedish War College in Stockholm . In 1953 he was promoted to major and in 1955 to lieutenant colonel . After his promotion to colonel , he was chief of the material staff in the Army High Command (Hærens overkommando) from 1965 to 1967 and head of the material department in the Ministry of Defense between 1967 and 1974. As such, he was promoted to major general in 1972 . After his promotion to Lieutenant General (Generalløytnant) he was between 1974 and 1977 commander in chief of the armed forces in Northern Norway (Forsvarskommando Nord-Norge) . Most recently he was promoted to general on March 21, 1977 and succeeded General Herman Fredrik Zeiner-Gundersen as Commander in Chief of the Norwegian Armed Forces (Forsvarssjef) . He held this post for five years until he retired on June 30, 1982, after which he was replaced by General Sven Hauge .
