Torolf Rein

Torolf Rein (born October 20, 1934 in Fusa , Hordaland ) is a former Norwegian admiral of the Navy (Kongelige Norske Marine) , who was last Commander in Chief of the Norwegian Armed Forces (Forsvarssjef) from 1989 to 1994 .

Life

After attending school in 1958, Rein began his officer training at the Naval War School (Sjøkrigsskolen) and graduated from the Naval Postgraduate School of the US Navy between 1961 and 1963 . After serving in the Naval Material Command (Sjøforsvarets forsyningskommando) from 1963 to 1967 , he found uses on various naval vessels such as the frigates KNM Narvik , KNM Stavanger and KNM Oslo and was, among other things, the commander of a fast attack boat and a section officer on a frigate . In the meantime he was a graduate of the Naval Staff School (Sjøforsvarets stabsskole) in 1974 . Later he was an officer in the Defense Command Northern Norway (Forsvarskommando Nord-Norge) from 1977 to 1980 . In 1980 he moved to the Naval Staff and was Deputy Chief of the Naval Staff and Head of the Personnel Department between 1982 and 1983. During this time he graduated from the Defense College (Forsvarets høgskole) in 1982 .

After his promotion to Rear Admiral , Rein became the commander of the naval forces in Northern Norway in 1983. After he was promoted to Vice Admiral in 1987 , he served as Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces in Northern Norway between 1987 and 1989. Most recently he was promoted to Admiral on September 5, 1989 and took over from General Vigleik Eide as Commander in Chief of the Norwegian Armed Forces (Forsvarssjef) . He held this position until he retired on October 31, 1994 and was then replaced by General Arne Solli .

For his services, he was, among other things , Star Commander of the St. Olav Order .
