Finn Lambrechts (born June 16, 1900 in Kristiania ; † December 8, 1956 in Paris ) was a Norwegian lieutenant general in the air force (Luftforsvaret) , who was last chief of the defense staff (Sjef for Forsvarsstaben) from 1955 to 1956 .

Life

After attending school, Lambrechts completed an officer training course in the Navy (Kongelige Norske Marine) and became a naval officer after graduation in 1921 . In 1924 he began his aviation training at the Naval Aviation School (Marinens flyskole) and after graduating in 1925 he was a naval pilot. In 1928 he took part in the search for the lost polar explorers Roald Amundsen and Umberto Nobile . He was then head of the Kristiansand naval air base between 1928 and 1931 . In 1933 he made a flight from Horten to Svalbard with the Norwegian-made maritime reconnaissance aircraft Marinens Flyvebaatfabrikk MF.11 (Høver MF.11) . He was then chief pilot of the national airline DNL ( Det Norske Luftfartselskap ) between 1935 and 1939 .

After the attack of the German Wehrmacht in Norway on 9 April 1940 flew Lambrechts over Sweden to Britain , where he head of with maritime patrol and submarine hunting aircraft type Lockheed P-3 and Type Consolidated PBY "Catalina" equipped and the air base RAF Woodhaven and RAF Leuchars in Scotland stationed No. 333 Squadron RAF was. After the end of World War II and his return to Norway, Lambrechts was promoted to colonel in 1946 and was chief of the Vestlandet Air Command between 1946 and 1951 . On December 1, 1951, he was promoted to Lieutenant General (Generalløytnant) , whereupon he succeeded Major General Bjarne Øen until he was replaced by Lieutenant General Birger Fredrik Motzfeldt in 1955 as Commander in Chief of the Air Force (sjef for Luftforsvaret) . Most recently, on November 1, 1955, he succeeded Lieutenant General Ole Berg as Chief of Defense Staff (Sjef for Forsvarsstaben) . At the beginning of December 1956 he was at a NATO conference in Paris, where he died on December 8, 1956 as a result of a heart attack . On January 10, 1957, Lieutenant General Bjarne Øen was the new chief of the defense staff. For his services he was, among other things , Star Commander of the Order of Saint Olav .
