(6597) Kreil is an asteroid of the main belt that was discovered on January 9, 1988 by the Czech astronomer Antonín Mrkos at the Kleť Observatory ( IAU code 046) near Český Krumlov .

The asteroid was named on March 9, 2001 after the Austrian astronomer and meteorologist Karl Kreil (1798–1862), who was director of the Prague Clementinum observatory from 1845 . In July 1851, Kreil was commissioned to set up the Central Institute for Meteorology and Geomagnetism in Vienna. At the same time he was appointed full professor for physics at the University of Vienna , where he carried out studies on the earth's magnetic field .
