Antonin Mrkos

Antonín Mrkos (born January 27, 1918 in Střemchoví , † May 29, 1996 in Prague ) was a Czech astronomer .

Life

After attending the school in Dolní Loučky and the grammar school in Tišnov , Mrkos completed an apprenticeship at the church pedagogy Svatý Jan pod Skalou . During his teacher training course, Mrkos often visited the Štefánik observatory, where he also learned how to cut glass lenses. After finishing his studies, Mrkos worked as a teacher in Nové Město na Moravě , Skryje and Žďárec . Mrkos gave up teaching after the Second World War and worked at the Skalnaté Pleso observatory . At the invitation of Soviet scientists, Mrkos took part in a successful one and a half year expedition to the Antarctic in the 1950s, where he studied a.o. a. Northern lights . Then he received an invitation to another expedition. At that time Mrkos was also a member of the mountain rescue service on Lomnický štít and saved around 100 people from emergencies.

In 1965 Mrkos took over the observatory on the Kleť and let it u. a. expand into a well-known observatory by installing Maksutov telescopes . Mrkos was also a lecturer at the mathematics and physics chairs at the Universities of Prague and České Budějovice .

He discovered 13 comets , including 18P / Perrine-Mrkos , 124P / Mrkos and C / 1957 P1 , as well as 60 planetoids and 275 other objects. The planetoids discovered by Mrkos include Horky , Střemchoví , Růžena and Ludmila .

The asteroid (1832) Mrkos is named after him.
