St. Michael (Dormagen)
St. Michael is the Roman Catholic parish church of the city of Dormagen in the Rhine district of Neuss . Basically it goes back to the 12th century.
history
The originally Romanesque church was listed in the 12th century. In 1274 it was incorporated into the Andreasstift in Cologne . The nave was replaced by a new building in Gothic times; the Romanesque tower made of tufa was preserved. In 1887 the Gothic nave was laid down - its floor plan is marked in the pavement - and a three-aisled neo - Gothic new building by Franz Statz was built to the west of the tower . The originally easted church was aligned to the west. In addition, a fourth floor was added to the tower.
In 1970 the neo-Gothic church was closed down to the lower parts of the nave walls due to disrepair. Today these form an atrium in front of a new hexagonal building in the west by Hans Schilling . The interior of the new church descends towards the altar area. The interior is illuminated by narrow windows that break through the outer walls in a long vertical line.
