The Chamber of Crafts in Cologne is one of 53 chambers of crafts in Germany. It is based on Heumarkt in Cologne .

Foundation and legal form

It was founded on April 1, 1900 on the basis of the Craftsman Protection Act of July 26, 1897. Some of the more than 20 Cologne guilds took part in the establishment of the Cologne Chamber of Crafts. It is organized in the legal form of a corporation under public law , so that craft businesses are compulsory members, whereby a distinction is made between non-licensed and licensed trades according to the craft regulations . Since April 1900, 71 chambers of crafts have been established in the German Empire .

The first chairman of the Cologne chamber was the master shoemaker Fritz Figge (* 1851, † 1920), who ran the business at Bischofsgartenstrasse 5 until his death. From 1908 she resided at Machabäerstraße 34. During the National Socialist era , the Chamber of Crafts was incorporated into the Cologne Chamber of Commerce on April 1, 1943. It was re-established on June 6, 1945 by President Bernhard Günther , who provisionally ran the business in a school building at Gilbachstrasse 20. In October 1959 she moved into the new building designed by Hans Schilling with three imitation gables at Heumarkt 12; Werner Ingendaay added the eastern part in 1970.

tasks

The tasks of the chambers of crafts are regulated in the Crafts Code of September 17, 1953. It represents the interests of the skilled trades , advises them (on legal and corporate issues) and organizes training courses. It carries out the journeyman's and master's exams and issues journeyman's and master's certificates . The Cologne Chamber has numerous training centers. The Chamber exercises the legal supervision of the guilds and the District Trade machinations of the chamber district. The Chamber of Crafts includes the owners of a craft business and craft-related trades as well as journeymen, employees with completed professional training and trainees.

organization

The chambers of crafts are supervised by the responsible state ministry for economics. The chambers function as self-governing bodies with a general obligation to contribute. Compared to other cities, the Cologne Chamber's basic contribution, which is based on corporate profits, is low at 75 euros (Berlin has the highest basic contribution at 250 euros). Its chamber district is identical to the administrative district of Cologne and includes the independent cities of Cologne , Bonn and Leverkusen as well as the districts of Rhein-Sieg-Kreis , Oberbergischer Kreis , Rhein-Erft-Kreis and Rheinisch-Bergischer Kreis . The organs are the general assembly, committees, board of directors and president. The Cologne Chamber of Crafts consists of two managing directors, twelve board members and 53 members of the plenary meeting, two thirds of whom are business owners and one third are employees. It employs around 250 people and represents around 33,300 companies (of which around 17,500 are companies that require approval), making it the second largest in North Rhine-Westphalia. She is a member of the West German Chamber of Crafts . It has an office in Bonn's Godesberger Allee.
