St. Stephen from the west

St. Stephanus is a Catholic church in Münster in the Aaseestadt district . It is a branch church of the Catholic parish of St. Liudger. It was built from 1963 according to plans by the architect Hans Schilling (Cologne) and consecrated on December 11, 1965.

architecture

The St. Stephen's Church is a modern brick building . It is part of a building complex on the ground plan of an irregular pentagon, with an inner courtyard, around which other municipal buildings are grouped (e.g. kindergarten, rectory).

The church itself is designed in the shape of a pentagon, with a cone-like choir closure 23 m high. At the north-west corner there is a stair tower that leads to the organ stage and houses three bells on its upper floor.

The church interior manages without columns or pillars. It is bordered by high, brick-facing walls, the windows are each below the ceiling approach. They are designed as light strips and let subdued light into the church. Adjacent, the room opens up to a low chapel that is used as a weekday church.

Furnishing

The furnishings (altar, ambo , sacrament house, sedil , baptismal font) were largely designed by Hein Wimmer (Cologne). It is made of Greek marble. Relics of St. Stephen and St. Viktor von Xanten are set in the block-shaped altar .

There are 20 icon panels in the church that were painted in the first half of the 18th century. They are part of a Russian iconostasis that probably consisted of 34 panels.

organ

The organ was built in 1973 by the organ builder Fleiter & Sohn (Münster). The slider chests -instrument has 31 registers on three manuals and pedal . The game actions are mechanical, the stop actions are electric.
