The House of Architecture in Cologne ( hdak ) is a building culture center that serves as a stage, shop window and forum for architecture , urban development , open space planning, planning and building culture in the region. The sponsor is the non-profit association for the promotion of architecture and urban development .

The activities of the house include public lectures and discussion events in the building culture spectrum; including the weekly series of events Every Tuesday at 7 p.m. - one hour of Baukultur . Furthermore, exhibitions , film screenings, guided tours and excursions as well as advanced training events are offered. The target group is the interested public.

The House of Architecture Cologne was brought into being with the founding meeting of the sponsoring association on February 25, 2005. Well-known Cologne architects and personalities and institutions associated with architecture were involved. Until March 2008, the institution was based in a building that was planned and built by Joachim Schürmann and used as its own architectural office for a long time. Since 2009 the office has been located in the hdak cube on the Josef-Haubrich-Hof in the immediate vicinity of the Neumarkt (architect: Gernot Schulz, Cologne).

In 2009 the house was awarded the National Prize for Integrated Urban Development and Building Culture by the Federal Ministry of Transport together with the Bremen Center for Building Culture . In 2015 it received the honorary award of the Cologne Culture Prize . Barbara Schock-Werner , the former master builder of the cathedral , gave the laudatory speech .

Event series "Every Tuesday 7 pm - one hour of building culture"

The format “Every Tuesday 7 pm - one hour of building culture” has two equal components; first the content impulse in the form of short lectures, then the discussion between the audience “on an equal footing” with the speakers, if possible actually scheduled for one hour. This culture of discussion is very much appreciated by both the invited speakers and the audience - at over 490 events with over 600 speakers and discussion guests.

Issues that are taken up often lead to further developing them outside of the weekly format in their own projects and networks.

Network for community building and living in the hdak

The "network for community building and living" is based on an impulse from the weekly format and has become the central platform in Cologne for building groups, cooperative living and co-housing projects. It advises and informs interested parties on the subject of community building and living. Regular network meetings and theme evenings as well as the annual Cologne Housing Project Day complete the offer.

Cologne building culture calendar

The hdak continuously collects and researches the data of building culture events in Cologne and has been creating a comprehensive "Cologne building culture calendar" from this since 2009. The calendar is public and is advertised via the Internet and a weekly e-mail newsletter.

The house of architecture in Cologne is supported by the "House of Architecture Cologne - Association for the Promotion of Architecture and Urban Development". Founded in February 2005, the association now has over 210 members from many areas of social life.
