National prize for integrated urban development and building culture

The National Prize for Integrated Urban Development and Building Culture in Germany was awarded in 2009 by the Federal Ministry for Transport, Building and Urban Development as part of the Architecture and Building Culture Initiative .

backgrounds

The nationwide competition was held on February 23, 2009 under the motto “Building the City. Living the city. ”Started. The aim was the ideal support of projects for sustainable and innovative urban development.

The award ceremony by the then Federal Minister Wolfgang Tiefensee took place on June 24, 2009 in the Zeche Zollverein in Essen . The following day, the 3rd Federal Congress on National Urban Development Policy took place in Essen, at which the results of the competition were also discussed.

The award-winning projects were included in the 2010 “Realstadt” exhibition on the status of urban development and building culture in Berlin. No prize money was awarded.

Prizes awarded

429 projects from 221 cities were submitted to the competition. A total of 55 prizes were awarded in five advertised categories, including 12 special prizes.

Make cities better

In the category "Designing cities better", projects were honored in the context of which building ensembles , public parks or squares, as well as more complex locations were redesigned and which provided social impulses. A jury chaired by the architect Franz Pesch awarded 13 prizes and five special prizes.

Act in an integrated and regional manner

In the “Integrated and Regional Acting” category, projects were honored that aimed to transform or further develop entire regions or landscapes. A jury chaired by the architect Sigurd Trommer awarded nine prizes and two special prizes.

Creating opportunities and strengthening cohesion

In the “Creating opportunities and strengthening cohesion” category, projects were recognized which had promoted educational and integration opportunities in a neighborhood or district. A jury chaired by the urban sociologist Rotraut Weeber awarded six prizes and two special prizes.

Committed to the city

In the “Committed to the City” category, projects were honored that have distinguished themselves through civic engagement or the perception of corporate social responsibility . A jury chaired by urban planner Elke Pahl-Weber awarded ten prizes and one special prize.

Building the city of tomorrow

In the “Building the City of Tomorrow” category, contributions to the ecological and sustainable redesign of cities were recognized. A jury led by Hans Georg Reinke, chairman of the competition committee of the Federal Chamber of Engineers , awarded five prizes and two special prizes.
