Samaritan Quarter

Samariterstrasse

The Samariterviertel (also Samariterkiez or Nordkiez ) is a neighborhood in the Berlin district of Friedrichshain in the Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg district . The area is located around 3.5 kilometers from Alexanderplatz on the eastern edge of the city center. It is located north of Frankfurter Allee and is located around the Samariterkirche and Samariterstraße . It is bounded in the west by Proskauer Straße, in the east by the Ringbahn and in the north by the area of the former central cattle and slaughterhouse on Eldenaer Straße.

From 1993 to 2008 it was designated as a redevelopment area. In the course of this, the structure of the residential buildings was comprehensively modernized. Today the renovation is largely complete. As a result of the redevelopment, the Samariterviertel was awarded the National Prize for Integrated Urban Development and Building Culture by the Federal Ministry of Transport in 2009.

The Samariterviertel has an area of 33.8  hectares (around 0.34 km²) and includes 263 properties. 8,370 residents lived here on December 31, 2006. At the beginning of the renovation, the population was only 6,223 - an increase of 34.5% in 13 years. This increase is due to the rental of previously unrenovated, vacant apartments, but also to the creation of new living space. The population growth was not steady, however. By 1999 the number of inhabitants had even decreased to 5800 due to the strong renovation work and rose again in the following years by 44.3% in seven years.

Many of the former residents did not return after the renovation. With the influx of "new" residents, the quarter has changed significantly socially. The lifestyles that characterize the street scene resemble the urban middle class, as you would otherwise find in middle-class neighborhoods ( Kollwitzkiez , Winterfeldtplatz ).

An exception here is Rigaer Straße, which is characterized by punks from all over Europe . The colorful facades of the formerly occupied houses contrast with those of the ocher-colored houses with condominiums in Bänschstrasse , which is only two parallel streets away.
